General Frank T. I lines, bureau di
rector, said in an address for delivery
toduy before members of tbe Disabled
American Veterans of the World war,
at their fifth annual convention hero
today.
Throughout his address, General
Hinea Btresacd bis desire for a con
tinuance of cooperation between tbe
bureau and tbe veterans and their
officials. "This spirit of coopera
tion," he said, "must prevail as it Is
one of tbe largest factors in putting
over the job."
Reviewing the results achieved by
each bureau department, during the
past year, .General limes .said that
the organization now had a better
conception of the wants of the dis
abled veterans; that medical cure and
liospitilization had been improved
through tbe erection of many mod
ern hospitals; that vocational re
habilitation had made progrens so that
by Juno 30 next all eligibles will
have been contacted in cooperation
with the hospital authorities and serv
ice organizations; 'that veterans' call
ing for compensation chums had been
completed; a more efficient rating
achedule adopted and war insurance
policies re-instated for many dis
abled veterans.

given the credit for the early control
of the fire at I'rineville yesterday
morning by J. L. Gaither, manager of
the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph
company for Deschutes and Crook
counties. Mr. Gaither returned to
Bend this morning.
Miss Augustine discovered the fire
which broke out in the newspaper of
fice directly adjoining the telephone
office and In the same building. With
finoke pouring into the room where
the switchboard was located, she
stuck to the board, calling all of the
firemen and alio officers of the Ma
sonic lodge whose lodge rooms wire
directly overhead. i

telephone equipment was threatened. I
He made the .'IS mile trio to I'rine-
ville in record time stepping Into tha
office fi8 minutea after the operator
had called him nt bis home here.
"I shall certainly make a very spe
cial mention of Miss Augustine's level
headed work when I make my re
port," Gaither said this morning.
"She stuck to ber board until every
one affected was called. She was only
a substitute cn tbe night board, the
regular operator being on her vaca
tion. Mis AuguHtine has been with
the company only about a year."
The telephone equipment was un
damaged but holes were burned
through int othe walls from the of
fice at the Central Oregonian where
the fire originated and where mure
than ?5000 worth of damage was done
to the machinery, according to late
estimates.

terested, the association announces
that Tuesday evening, 7:30, to 9:0O
o'clock has been set aside for this
purpose. A competent instructor will
be on hand to teach swimming to
those who wish to learn, and for tho!
who wish to become more proficient
in the art. Membership for ' tho.e
months is sold at a nominal cost, sin
gle admissions being accorded to the
guests of members. A large number of
women have learned to swim at the
Y. M. C. A, pool every season, and it
offers a real opportunity to the wom
en of the city.

city of Forbes, New South 'Wales.

tralian dispatches have told of wide
spread damage from floods In several
sections, chiefly in Southern New
South Wales, with the flooded areas
In some cases extending well up to
ward Sydney. A Sydney message June
22 said Forbes was being threatened
by the floods.

representing various scientific and re
ligious phases of the evolution ques
tion, will be called into the trial of
J. T. Scopes, indicted high school
teacher, it bus becu announced , by
defense counsel, who continued a con
ference here today.
Clarence Durrow and Huinbridge,
Colby, who came here last night with
other members of the defense staff
were principal speakers at the gradu
ating exercises of the John It. Neal
College of Law, and incidentally, were
presented with, honorary degrees of
doctor of lawa.
A similar honor went to Dudley
Malnne of New York, who was not
present, however, but. who expected
to join bis conferees here today. Dr.
John It. Neal, senior defense coun
el presented the degrees referred to
Mr. Darrow as the man who framed
the first juvenile court law.
Declaring that "many of our legis
lators will vote for anything they
think will bring them votes," Mr.
Darrow in his address said this waa
true of some senators and asserted
"they voted for prohibition when they
bad liquor in their own possession."
"And they still have litpior," be
