TVodncsfV Evening,, Pago Ten THE EUGENE GUARD : 1 1 vi I (ConUo'ie from poire one) being done there. 'J'he way in which tudrnts use the library, end the man ner in which the.v apply themselves to tbMr studios indicate thnt much constructive work is being done here, Dr. Spaeth dorltired. . Institution Endowed Princeton university is on endowed institution, supported in a large part hv the alumni, hence the organization of the governing body would differ somewhat from that of a state- owned university. Executive power is vested in n board of partly self-perpetuating, partly elected trustees, re cruited from alumni, and iroin um tricla of the United Stales. Alumni ronrcNctilntion is very important. staled Dr. Spaeth, nnd It is his belief tlmt since Btatn institutions arc can ing more and more on alumni for help, through endowment and gift cam paigns, that a demand for represen tation on governing bodies would be made in the near future. The board of trustees nt Princeton deals with the faculty in almost ex nctlv the snme way aa requested by the faculty at Oregon during Iho re cent demotion nnd dismissal cases. A "conference committee" composed of five members of tho faculty nnd a similar number from tho board of trustees, meets before every meeting of the hoard. Here nil matters relat ing to the faculty, on which a confer ence in desired, are brought up, dis cussed, nnd resolutions passed con cerning them. In this way. faculty opinion and desires nre definitely understood, and presented for ' con sideration. Commltteo Plan Told The faculty committee is an actual representative body of the entire fac ulty, and it is appointed by tho "com mittee on committees," a body elect ed by the faculty. Member prve on the faculty committee for three years, in rotation, nnd in this way experi enced men arc always on hand. The board of trustees nlso presentB mat ters at the conference, through its committee of five! nnd If the faculty committee feels that the ' matter should be given deeper consideration, they request thnt the' be allowed to present it to tho faculty in regulnr meeting. While the action of the conference committee Is not binding on the trus tees, the faculty hns a definite voice, and a full opportunity to present its side of every point for considerntinn, pnintB out Dr. Spaeth. All discus sions are brought to definite conclu sions, nnd recommendations in the form of resolutions, are passed. A course of action Is thus outlined for both the fnculty nnd the board of trus tees. Feeling Is Better "The faculty members feel that they are being treated like gentlemen, nnd that thcynre receiving every fair con Kiderntion," said Ir. Rpaetll. "Their consultation and advice la not only received, but asked In tho conference tin-clings. The dignity of tho profes sion, and nbovo all, the liberty that comes when men nre nnnfraid of in terference or dictation from others, Ib thus preserved." If an Investigation of the recent acta of the University of Oregon board of regents Is taken up by the SOCIETY AND CLUBS By MARIAN LOWRY Mr. and Mth. A. A. Itogfra nre tliii pvnniriK entertaining the Wednesday Dinner Jiridge club at their home. Mm. One of the very Informal nnd de lightful socio I gatherings of the cam pus during the aummer mission was held last evening when a lawn picnic supper was given for all students ond fnculty members. The event this year whs given on (he mm pus grounds lie- twen Pcndy nnd McClure halls. After n year's study nt flrinnell college, (irinnell, Iowa, Miss Mclbu Williams Itss returned to Eugene, to spend the sum titer with her parents. Vhe arrived in Portland Sunday, her mother, Mrs, C. S. Williams nnd Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hall motoring dowd there to meet her. Miss Williams has been studying voice in Iowa and will return to continue her work in the full. She is u graduate of the Univer sity of Oregon. The regular monthly meeting of the f'ollege Crest Community club is to be held tomorrow evening at the club house. Dinner will be served at bii tbirty o'clock. A short business ses sion is to follow the dinner. Lester Hulin will liter give an illustrated lecture on "(Jlimpses of Karly Hm tory of Kugene nnd I.nne County." O. IS. Klctchet is nlso to epenk as n part of the program. American Association of University professors, it is to be regarded very seriously, declared Dr. Spaeth. While this association has no executive pow er, nn unfavornble report will mean thnt It will be prnctically impossible to induce men to come to a university thus reported on, he pointpd out. Actions of governing bodies of state owned universities should be given full publicity, and the press given ac cess to all material directly concern ing the university, believes Dr. Spaeth. In this way the people will bo correctly informed, nnd the uni versity will render a maximum of ser vice to those who support it. Dr. Spneth Is well known in Oregon, and is regarded very highly, both as educator and for Ins courses taught here while he has been a mC'iiiher of summer school faculties.
