Saturday Evening, June 6 THE EUGENE GUARD Pigo Six 1321 1 (Continued From pnice ona) a low groan. Hut she was not surf whether he did ur not. A sudden ruli of pity for him swept over her Win a wave. Knr he roust love her the way she cared for Stanley Wayhurn . . . hopelessly and lielnlcsslv! . . . And yet fllnry knew that in time sho would have lorKotten all about Stanley Wavhurn if he had not come, hark. She had nil hut put hint out of her heart during the months before her marriage to IMck. And why had he come bark to spoil Pick's life and hern, too? I'or lory was certain that, in a mn'l sort of way, fho would have been quite contented to he Jlick's wife, all the rent of her days ... if she had not seen Stan gairj . . . He hod always been able to sweep her off her feet I The doorbell ran, (ilory opened it to Dr. John. Well, well, Is tha Utile wife wor ried V" he asked in his kindly way when he saw her troubled face. "Hut there's really no need of it. JHck has just another touch of that 'flu' of bis. Well have him straightened ar ound In a day or two. Where is he?" (ilory led tha way to Hie living room. "So this Is the way you obey or ders, Is it? I thought I told you to go home and go straight to bed, young fellow!" IT. John said. Dirk stared at him dully. "(lo up and put a couple of hot water bottles in hia bed, Glory," I'r. John ordered, Inking out bis clinical thermometer. "Ho looks as If he's having a bit of a chill." The doctor popped his thermometer into Dick's mouth, as (ilory turned to go. She found tho only hot water bottlo in the house, after a long search and filled it. Whilo Dr. John was helping Dirk Into bed, (ilory telephoned Mother Gregory to come right over. Then she gathered together her night-clothes, an armful of her bou doir pillows, and the novel sho was reading. She carried them nil across the hall to tho guest-room. For she had made up her mind to sleep there that night . . . that night, at leavt. Dick followed his wlfo around with benvy-lidded eyes. "Here's a couple of prescriptions. Betler go and get I hem filled right war, (ilory," Dr. John snid, busily writing on a small pad as be spoke. She took the slip of paper, put on her IhiiiRS and went downstairs. She drew a long sigh of relief as she stepped out inlo (bo blue-gray dusk of early evening. . . . What a incsa life was, (ilory thought. Jt made you care for the people you ought not to care for. it made the people who meant nothing to you at nil, fall in love wilh you. There was no more plan or pattern to life tint it (hero was to a orniy nulll. Not as much! It was thrown together, so far as she could see. How much more simple everything ivould he all Hie way around, for in stance. If Stan Wayhurn bad been In love wilh her a year ago as she hnd been with him . . and hnd married her! Then she would never have seen Plek. And he would probably have married some nice home. milking girl who would have kept all his socks mended and given him a houseful of children to make him proud and hnp liy. ... - While the clerk at the drug store was filling Dr. John's prescriptions, (ilory went Inln the telephone booth Bnd called Stan Wayhurn at bis hotel. "tlb. Stan. I'm so terribly sorry about this nflernnnn. I wouldn't have had Ihiligs happen the way they did for anything in the world," she told hint when Mie beard his voice. Slan laughed carelessly. "Don't you bother yr.ur cuts head i about me, ltusset, for a single sec-1 nnd." he said. "Just forget It. I; toid your husband where to head in. though, by the way." "You did!" (ilory 'a surprise was In Ji.r voice. She was sure that it had been Dick who hnd told Stan where to "head In!" Moreover, she remem bered how meekly Sinn hail obeyed when Dirk hail told him to get nut of the bouse. "I certsinly told him nothing else but!" Wavhurn went on. "You did n't suppose 1 was going to lie flown like a rug and tnke all bis insults, did yon? , . . Not on vour guy young life, I wasn't! And what's more. I'm going to see you w herever and when- Jbv Heairice Burton na nuns 111111.1111111 ,iMi' 1 is jwij,si 1 .1 m il. . ''o,' l , i'f VI A. 4 Bis 0 P ! i X1 f . Ths thought of Wayhurn rose between them like an insurmountable wall. "(ilory, tell me one thing," Dirk said surprisingly. "And think before you give me an answer . , , you're not in love with this Wayhurn fejlow, are you?" Hia anger w-as ' entirely gone. "That s not the point," (ilory said coldly. "The point is that you've shamed and humiliated me before my friends. And Ml never forgive you for it. 1 don't know bow 1 can ever face any of them again." Dick sat up in bed. "I wish you never would see anr of them again," he said rehemcntlv. "They're not the kind of people I, want you lo have for friends 1 won-1 der If you know the things people, are saying anout .nay anil .Mm . . beastly things'.' Oh, people! People make me tired the way they gossip about everv- hodv'" (ilory said contemptuously. She' went out and closed the door loudly. Mother Gregory had a cold supper laid on the kitchen lahle. She was drinking tea and reading the evening '""Have you been asked to loin the new Home Women's Club?" she esked Glory, without raising ber eyes from the paper. "I Pt T" .nn" up for it. I want my son wife to belong to it." "Yes, I've been ssked, and bave sent in my first dues," Glory an swered as she took her place at the table. "Thanks for putting ine up for it. 1 guess mosfr-of the women in town are going to be members, are n't they? I'd hate to be left out. Mother Gregory pursed up her lips. "Oh. there are a few women who areiCt getting in!" she remarked acid Jr. "Your friend Mrs. Seymour, for instance! Shell never be asked to Join, if Bha lives to he a hundred. Glorv was silent. She knew now what Dirk meant by the "beastly things" people were saying about May . . . and Jim Carewe! (To be continued tomorrow) Mrs. Dippel's parents, Mr. and Mrs. j Stephen Gallier. Sho ran upstairs and bolted the door of her room. she heard the handle of her door turn . She was sure ever I want to . . . if you want me to. Yon do. don't you?" "Of course, 1 want to . . . but did you really tell all that to Dick?" Glory nuked incredulously. "N no, not exactly that way," 8 tun ndinitted. "Well, I iiiint rinc off, now," Glory nflid. "Goodby, Stan." Khe wan vaguely disappointed in Wayhurn. Bha would have liked him to stand up to JMrk that nfternoon. She wanted to be proud of him, some-; how. When Glory returned to the house nhe found Mother Gregory in charge. .Sim had tied a white upron, rrnckliug wih stnrchinefts, over her hlnrk nilk drew, nnd she was tenderly bathing lHck'n face. "Thornj colds of iis come from his stomuch, I'm sura of it," she said itfcusiiiKly to her daughter-in-law. "lie's either been upset over some thing or his diet in all wrong- Do you Rivn him much fried food?" Glory tried to think whether or not ftnnKhihl fried the ment and pnta toes very often. Hhn thought not. "Well, nn.vwny, 1 lick's to have nothing but cge-nog for hi supper," Mother Gregory went on without uniting for Glory's reply. ")ou go down nnd beat it up while 1 make Dirk comfortable for tho night , . , and make inn h cup of tea, whiU you're nt it. J wn Just sitting down to dinner when you phoned m, and I came right over without a bile.." Glory stood looking helplessly nt Mother Gregory's broad satin-covered back, "IWiiw do you make an rgg-nog?" she AHked finally. Mother Gregory turned and faced her. Her fine hlnrk eyes were, wid ened in nstonishmcnt, ''Well, 1 never henrd of st.eh n thing! Yon, n grown woman, not knowing how tn beat a little milk and egg together!" she exclaimed. "Von sit bre nnd wait for me n min ute. . . . When 1 finish with Dick I'll go downstairs with you, and ahow you how to make an egg-nog!" Khe smoothed the pillows under Dick's head. Then she pulled the hot water bottlo from between the sheets, and gave it to Glory. "Go and empty half the water out of that thing!" she ordered. "Never fill a hot water bottle to the very top. It'll burst if you do. . . . And roll it up in a clean towel before you bring it hack!" Silently Glory obeyed. Then the two women went down to ItangfaUd'a spotless white kitchen. "Now then,' Mother Gregory snid briskly. "Tut on your apron and wash your hands and we'll get to work. She bustled about collecting tha milk and cggH and nutmeg an she spoke (ilory had no aprons of her own. She hnd no use for aprons. But she found one of Unngluld'a in a pantry drawer nnd tied it on. "When the egg-nog was" made Dick's mother poured ft Into n tnll glnes nnd set it nn a little tray. "You tuke it up to Dick whilo I stir around nnd get a hito of supper for tn, (ilory," she snid. "And Bee that he drinks every drop of It!" Slowly nnd unwillingly Glory went upstnirs. I lick's eyes were fixed on the door as she swung it ajar. She set the tray on a cbair at the side of Dick's bed. "Here's the best meal your little old wife ever cooked for you," (ilory snid with a gayely she was far from feeling, Dick merely lookrd nt her. She slipped nn nrm behind his shoulders to rniso him but ho pushed it away. "(iive me the glnss." he said short ly. He drained it, and lay down again with his face turned toward the wall. (ilory picked up her tray to go. Hut before she reading the door Dick had called to her. "Glory, you took your things into the guest-room, he snid.
