(A) An al leged attempt to tamper with an al leged prospective juror is the latest nervation of the trial of William Darling Shepherd, charged with kill ing his millionaire foster son, William Nelson McClintock with typhoid germs. Kobert E. Crowe, state's attorney, charged some one connected with the defense with making the attempt and he has directed a complete investiga tion. iJetectivea were ordered to ar rest one named by Philip .1. Barry. a venireman, as having approached him Tuesday before he was questioner for jury service. Harry said he was acquainted with ! the man who urgpd him to "work your way on to the jury" and prom ised to "make it well worth your while." After he had told a detect ive that he had been approached, Barry was excused fr'om jury service, and later mad" bis statement to the prosecutor. The state's attorney said Barry's was not the only information he had and that his inquiry also in cluded alleged tampering with wit peases. Investigation of the first sensa tion of the trial, the disappearance of Jlobert White, one of the chief slate's witnesses was undertaken by a spe cial grand jury session late yester day. Arthur Byrne, an investigator for the law firm defending .Shepherd, and Mrs. Sylvia Adams, who previ ously had said White told her and her husband that he had been offered 2r,(XH) and a bungalow in Florida to leave Chicago, were held before the jury. No announcement of any action voted was made at the conclusion of the special session. Beyond resulting in White's disappearance and Barry story, the trial so far has made scant progress.
