SUBJECT OF TALK Vnless the public is educated to the point where the person who causes a forest fire is condemned as a menace to society, little progress can be made in the effort to prevent destruction of timber. Nelson F. Mncduff, super visor of the Cascade national forest, fold students in freshman journalism this morning at the University of Ore gon. .Mr. Macduff poiuted out that ef forts to plant trees were not profit- able nt a cost of per acre, when j nnture does It for nothing. "And itisj not very pneournging," he said, "to I plnnt new treps when here are fid,-! 000 firebrands in the 1'niled States j ready to burn them up." j Mr. Macduff went to Roseburg this i afternoon tn nddress the Kiwnuis i club tomorrow on the subject of I "Builders." In this tnlk he expects i to stress the fnct that no single ngen- i cy is as important as public nenli- I ment, combined with public coopers- ! tiou, in Ihe matter of fire proven- j tion. "The tin. her from 7"00 acres of land is required each week for Amer- ica's Sunday newspapers atone." says Mr. Macduff. "It takes the pulp ) trees from that much land to provide! the newsprint, paper. Vet publishing is only one of a hundred grours of in dustries that drsw their material from the forest. The lumber industry, j with Its 20.000 mills, consumes only a third of the wood thai is annually removed from Ihe forest. More wood is used for fuel than for lumber. Pi- j reetly snd indirectly the responsibility I for depletion of the forests resfs on ; everv citizen who uses wood in any! nf its manufactured forms."
