Rogers of the First NstionsI bank returned last night from a one day business visit at Wolf creek in Josephine county. Ts Visit Parents Wayne Hurd, who bas i.eently re covered from an attack of sleeping sickness, and his son Hark Hurd, went to Saltin yesterday to spend a few week visiting Mr. Hurd' s parents. Moves to Salem Charles Murray, connected for many years with Graham's shoe store, has resigned his position, and has gone to Salem tu join tbe Buster Brown shoe store there. Sewer Work Progresses Work on the installation of the new sewer system in the Eugene Heights district Is prgoressing snd this is expected, to be completed in tho near future, according to city officials. Jail Population Grows The Jjne county jail now lias an officio! population of IV inmates which is showing an increase. Iteccnt ly there were only 24 prisoners con fined which whs a low record for about, a year. One time enrly in the fall there were 50 inmates at tbe jail. Goes to Pendleton S. M: Calkins, city attorney, went to Pendleton yesterday to spend a few days on business. OFFICE IS MOVED Announcement that Southern Pa cific railroad headquarters have come back to Kan Francisco was received Joyfully in fhe Eugene district of fices and passenger station of the railroad this morning. The board of directors of the rail road, in accepting tbe resignation of Julius Kruttschuitt, chairman of the eiecutive committee, placed the sup ervision of operations under direction of William Sproule, preaident, mak ing him the chief executive officer of the company, and in charge of all departments. - "Mr. Sproule, on whosff shoulders falls the burden carried by the re tiring chairman. Is intimately ac quainted with Oregon and Oregon's railroad problems," said Ij. Jj. Gra ham, district freight and passenger agent. "He first entered the service in 1SS2, in the freight department, nnd came up from the ranks to presi dent of the company. He has been signally successful in establishing pol icies that have gained and maintained public confidence. "Hugh Neill, now secretary, was appointed a vice-president and G. W. Mulks, assistant controller was made controller. J. P. Blair, general coun sel will have charge of the lcgnl busi ness of the company in New York, neighboring states and Kentucky and of the Southern Pacific Steamship lines. "Paul Shoup, vice-president and as sistant to the president was appointed as executive, vice-president. Under the direction of President Sproule, Shoupe will have charge of the man agement, operation and traffic of the road west of Ogden, Utah. His of fices will be in San Francisco. "Mr. Kruttachnitt will be succeeded as chairman of the executive commit tee by Henry Deforest, who will be assisted by Vice-Chairman A. IX Mc Donald, now vice-president nnd con troller of the Southern Pacific. "The authority of the president, William Sproule, will be extended over all the properties of the com pany except the Texas and Louisana lines which will continue as hereto fore under the charge of W. .11. Thompson, of Marion coun ty, who is a farmer and a farmer director of the Pacific- Cooperative Wool . Grower's association, told of the work of that organization, Last year the association marketed 3, 500,000 pounds of wool nnd mohair for its members, according to Mr,; Thompson. New contracts are "being sigued with old members at this time and an effort is being made to in crease the membership. Improvement work on the Gimpl hill road is desired this summer by residents of that district, accordiug to Fred Gimpl who was here today to confer with the county court. This road Is said to be in poor condition and if it is not fixed this summer there is a possibility that the rural mail route was considered last winter luo to the bad road although Post master Darwin E. Yoran took no ac tion. The county rock crusher is now installed in that district nnd the pro posed improvements could be com pleted in the near future at much Je3S expense, it is said.
