SEASONAL DEMAND ESCAPE IIV ASH CAN Following fairly heavy seasonal calls for men from nearly all indus tries during the last half of March, employment demands in Lane county and Willamette valley have decreased and settled down to Jittle mdrs than normal replacements due to labor turnover, according to reports from ili service offices received at 4L head quarters in Eugene today. Labor turn over in the fir camps were larger last week thnn at any time this year. Woods work In the inland empire U being held up on account of snow, but stock cutting at pine mills is under way. Reports from districts oast of the Cascades indicate that there is plenty of resident labor them to meet present demands. There was a marked increase in labor turnover at both camps and saw mills in tho Portland district last week. 'The demand for loggers, esti mated to be 8il per cent replacements, wflB the heaviest It has been at any time this year and an average of more , than lfiO men left .Portland dally for; camps in the various districts which j secure held from this city. A very few) logging operation have Increased J their output by adding a side but ac-t tivity is far below uonmtl for this time of year. Skilled sawmill help is quite generally employed. AT JAIL RECALLED William Mnddox, ' one time guest of Lane county on a liquor charge nnd who made his escape by hiding iu an ach can and getting away under the watchful eyes of a deputy sheriff, is to be brought back hern und then will go on to Salem to serve out a year's sentence for possesion of a still. Maddox is In custody at Ttirlock, Cel., according to word received by Sheriff Frnnk E. Taylor of Lone and arrangements are being made to send a deputy south armed with extradition papers from Governor Pierce. Muddox following his conviction and sentence here about one year ago hid himself in an nsh -can covered his head and shoulders with a blanket and poured a layer of ashes over the top. All this was done with the aid of fellow prisoners the night before he, was to start his trip to the state prison. , , Two prisoners under guard of von Svnrverud, deputy sheriff, carried the con, presumably to contain nothing but ashes, to the rear of the Jail-yard. The can was left there unopened. A few minutes later Maddox emerged and ran through to Seventh avenue east where his wife awaited him fn a car. lie then passed out of local his tory until word of his arrest in the south was received today. Although a few people saw Mad dox escape from the can they did not notify the county authorities and it was not until time for the prisoner to leave for Hal em that it was found he was absent. Districts in West Lane to be Visited On a trip of a week to visit many of the school districts of western Lane, Arnold ('oilier, assistant coun ty superintendent and county club leader, has left for that area. This is the first trip of Mr. Collier into this school area since he assumed bis position here the first of the year. Many modes of transpor tation will be employed to reach some of the districts, horseback, boat, and automob.le and also the old army method known as the li7-inch route step march, Mr. Collier states.
