Jonea waa formerly a guard at the
Waahtngton atata penitentiary and
has made hie home in Walla Walla
an din Baker. McFarlane and Duck
worth are both Portland men, the lat
ter having aerved on the Portland po
lice force. He waa recommended to
Lerena by Portland police officers
and Portland circuit judgea.
Mr. Levena will ahortly make a trip
bout the atate to confer with abenfta
and district attorneya relative to pro
hibitioifwork. Later he expecta to call
all of bia men to Salem for a period of
inatruction. Among other thinga they
will be instructed as to their legal
rights in search and sciinre and how
to distinguish between state and fed
eral cases, .

Reconstruction of the McKenzie
telephone line from Thurston corner
to Iliglibankt, a distance of 2Vi miles
la being planned by the Cascade na
tional forest, and Smith U Taylor,

for tha work today, with assurance
from farmer lines in that aection that
they will co-operate with the forest
acrvice In the woVk.
How far the work will be carried oo
beyond Highbanka depends upon the
amount of money left and epeed with
which the work ia finished. Farmers
on the telephone line near Eugene
have decided not to co-operate with
the government in this work, it rs
stated. One set of poles will be pro
vided where heretofore two acts wore
required, on the Thuraton project.
Later on the foreat aervico will re
build the aix mile stretch of line from
Nimrod to Blue Hirer, aa aoon as the
road work ia finished.

didate for the presidency of the Ger

the tornado which swooped erraticnlly
from the everglades yesterday nnd

it vanished over the Atlantic. Tbe
death of Mrs. John T. Simpson of
West wood Park today increased tbe
death to four. The bulk of the dam
age was 'done at a dairy six miles
west of Miami, where Mrs. Mathilda
SchultK, 70. was killed, several injured
and six buildings demolished before
the twister rose to strike again at
a madhouse hear Little Tliver.
Two died there, John Wasdin Simp
son, 8, and K. K. Sullivan. Several
others were injured.
A mile and a half .further on It
pounced on KUsaheth Park. Ten
housese were splintered there and
thence it bounded aloug irregularly,
swooping to snap trees from their
roots, lift a house and barn from
foundations, toy with them and de
posit them in a field a quarter of a
mile away.

by the Lane county cboola May 9,
the fair committee of the Eugene
chamber of commerce is starting to
solicit. It is pointed out to local bust-
dm men by the committee members
that the pageant will bring thousands
of people in from all parts of Lane
county and that from a community
viewpoint the event looms as large as
many state conventions that have been
held here. It is expected that tbe
.necessary funds will be raised within
short time as tha committee is '
stressing the fart that it will mean i

well as a display of interest in the
schools of the county.
