Joker to Be Fined
Judge (..eorge A. Gilmore, police
judge, expects to "pour the acid'' on
one traffic law violator when he is
arrested and brought to justice. The
offender who has invoked the judge's
wrath is a practical joker of the
meanest kind. He played his little
joko on It. D. tStahl of Portland, a
traveling salesman nml M t:t..M ....
ported to Judge Gilmore. Here is i
what happened: Mr. Stahl had park
ed his automobile on Willamette I
street for not more than 33 minutes,
and when he went to get in it he
found a traffic tag on his machine,
arcuiiug him of parking more than
one hour. Producing proof that he
had not violated the city ordinance,
Mr. Stahl brought the tiig to Judge
Gilmore. The judge soon discovered
that the tag had been "forged," that
is, the license number and other
items except the initials of Captain
John Macey, who had attached the
tug to some other car probably .that
of the practical joker, t hief of Police
Judkins has authorized any police of
ficer discovering any motorist chang
ing a traffic tag to bring the mis
creant into court at once. Judge Gil
more has promised to do the rest,

Edward Saltsman of
Cottage Grove Dies
COTTAGE GROVE, March 18.
(Special). Following two strokes of
paralysis, Edward Arlando Saltsman
died Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Salt. man
had been in poor health for some time.
He ffna born in Enfield, Illinois, May
22. 1871. He was 53 years, 9 months
utd 25 days old. He was married in
iliinois, March 13, 1807, to Miss Myr
ile Allen. Three children are living,
William Saltsman of Long Beach, Cal.
and Ralph and Mryoa Saltsman of
Cottage Grove. He leaves, besides bis
widow, Mrs. Myrtle Saltsman ,and the
three children, his mother, Mm. Isa
line Tabitha Saltsman, of Cottage
Grove, and three brothers, Olage
Saltsman of Poplar Bluff. Mo., Allie
SaltBinun of Bclknal, 111., and Fred
Saltsman of Cottage Grove; one sis
ter, Mm. Mattio Little, and one
grandchild, Barbara Hose Saltsman
of Long Beach, Cal. Mr. Saltsman hnd
lived in Cottage Grove , nearly l,t
year3. Funeral notice -will be given

Meeting Is Thursday
The Washington school Parent
Teacher association will meet Tlinrs-

Campbell will give a talk on nutrition
clinic, and Mrs. M. S. Ady, advisory
matron of the police department, will

orchestra of the srhool is to give the

educate the people that it is not the
truth. If you want to overcome this,
don't go out as 1 have seen some do
with an" ad in the paper pleading for
support because you live here," the
visitor tells the dealers, "t think the
kind of propaganda tliat they aro us
ing is the kind you should use. So
many of these peddlers who come to
the house are found to be frauds. Got
the actual facta into the paper and
educate the .eople of the evils. To
pass a law will help regulati? but if
you want to get real actiou. yni want
to got some sort of an educatioti sys
tem going to educate the public."
Masquerade Tonight
Members ofjhe American Legion
and their ladies will take, part in a
big, masquerade, ball tonight at the
, chamber of commerce, it is announc
ed. No one will be admitted unless
marked, the committee states. Masks
will be removed toward the latter part
of the dance, when W. N. Wintler,

The girl's dress caught afire from.;

burns that proved fatal. She was
brought to Eugene, where every ef
fort was made to save her life, but
to no avail.
