" ttrr I roui Cynthia Grey Says: By CYNTHIA GREY QYNTIIIA STEWART came from the sunny south. I met her when she took old Miss Finch's place at Che library across the street. Cynthia was homesick. She con fessed this to me after knew each other better. "I declare," she eald to me one day in her soft drawl, "I'm so blue some times that I jes' can't eat. And still I'm hungry for some beaten biacut and cundied yams and smothered chicken . . the kind of food they have down in Anne Arundel county and nowhere else in the world." "But you don't have to live up here away from your people," I said. "Why don't you go home to Mary land?" But she only shook her head and emiled in a sort of melancholy way. "Have dinner with me tonight," I urged her. "I can't promise the beaten bircuit, but I can smother the chicken and candy the sweet potatoes without any trouble." She came, wearing a shabby black dinner dress, and a string of lovely old pearls that set off her white skin u ml vivid gold hnir. "You uuked me why I don't go back to Maryland," she said, after he had praised the dinner. "Well, I'm going to tell you. Down south where I come from, my sort of people don't let their girlp v.ork for a living. They'd rather see them starve. "My folks have been in this country almost from the time it was first settled and they're as proud as roy alty. They tell me that my great grandmother never tied her own shoe laces. - "Do you believe it?" I aekej her. "Of course I do!" she answered. "She wns the belle of Anne Arundel county a hundred years ago. They still talk about the bails she used to give, and the New Year Day recep tions! I'm eure she'd turn in her grave if she could see me working in a common old library!" "Oh, I wouldn't cnll a library com mon, exuctly. It's the very treasure house of culture," I couldn't help say ing rather sharply. "Don't you enjoy your work?" s "'Deed 1 don't!" said Cynthia Stew art. "Yesterday when it was raining a womun cnine in and offered t spud me home in -her car. Daring to-patronize me. me a Maryland Stewart! I m not lazy but I just hnte the thoughts of being a working woman." But wonderful women everywhere are working women, I suggested. "Women with titles, and millions and birth and breeding, I continued. "My best friend is a woman professor at Goucher College in Baltimore!" "Is that so?" Cynthia asked with sudden interest. "Then you don't think it's a disgrace for a women to work?" "I've just about come to the point where I think it's a disgrace if she doesn't," I told her truthfully. She made no answer, but thoughtfully watched me pour the black coffee. "That's a new way of looking at the thint;," she said presently. Pr hape I've been living in the past down there in the country with just my grandmother and my two old aunts. Do you think I'm a snob?" "Well, I think you're old fashion ed." I said. "I'd like you to go with me to the business women's club some day. Will you?" She did. That was two years ago. Last month Cynthia wns elected pres ident of the club. And 1 don't believe she has brngged to any of the splen did women in it that phe's a Stewart of the first families of Maryland. In fact, I think she s half forgotten it herself!
