Here to learn democracy by command of her multimillionaire sportsman papa, Charlotte Delight Vanderlip, called "America's richest girl," hos exper ienced the greatest thrlU of her life. She has found out that a dollar is composed of 100 centB, and that there are people in tho -world pos sessed of real purpose whose time is not frittered away on vanity, hor ses and watering places. Almost two years ngo, Charlotte, who ia 20, fluttered away from her golden cnge in New York. She tested her wings and headed Btraight from the brownstone fronts of Fifth avenue to a dormitory ex istence at the University of Chicago here. To find out what the great mean ing of democracy was that was why papa sent her. And Charlotte is bo "tickled over the experiment that she will never, never go back. Oh, no, quite never. ' Has Htr Eyes Opened Out on her own, in a coeducational school where worth, personality and merit count for everything, and mon ey and station mean little, Charlotte, the poor little rich girl, who grew up and had her eyes opened Is much in love with life and living. Telephone Company In Fortieth Year The American Telephone and Tele graph company is this year celebrat ing its fortieth corporate anniver sary. In writing its certificate of incor poration 40 years ago, the organisers used some phrases, which, iu tho light of later developments, seem strikingly prophetic. The anniver sary being celebrated throughout the Bell system this year served to give point to these words from a docu ment now four decades old and furn ishes proof of the perfect clearness of vision of these pioneers of our national telephone- system. The purpose of tho organization is significantly stated in the certificate to be : "To connect one or more points in each and every city, town, or place in the state of New York, with one or more points in each and every other city, town or place In said state, and In each and every other of the United States, and in Canada, and Mexico; and each and every of said cities, towns, and places is to be connected with each and every other city, town, or place in said states and countries, and also by cable and other appropriate means with the rest of the known world." It was to meet the demand for such a unified service, nationwide in scopo, that on February 28, ISSi.. the American Telephone and Tele graph company was founded. For the first 34 years of Its existence it was distinctly the Telephone com pany of the long lines, but in 1800. it took over the central functions of the American Bell Telephone com pany, since which 'time it has acted as the central organization of the Bell ays; "in, in addition to operating long' distance traffic over the long lines.
