Capt. H. Bollerman This Is the leader of the Ilnnkpn sack (X. J.) high srhool basketball quintet that recently slHrtled the world by ending 1'asBaics sensation al run of lfif) straight victories. Bol lerman, who stands six feet sir inches, and plays center, had a big nuna in the overthrow of the "won der team." ner. Bingham could fcave been quietly dropped without being publicly hu miliated . Jack Dtmpsey ias joined tie mat rimonial league and taken a vow that be will fight no more. He probably means until the good old summertime. Gene Tunney, light heavyweight champion, w spending the winter in Florida. He is doing all his fighting on the golf links. Kid Kaplan, neweBt featherweight champion, is on the coast, where he is booked to meet a number of second-raters in bouts that will not in volve his title. In other words, many of the cham pions are making it a point to dodge titular bouts in the wintertime. The reason, of course, is purely fi nancial. OutdooT bouts, with stadiums capable -of seating from 60,000 to 100, 000 fight fans, mean bigger purses. While the fighters are not to be blamed for getting the money, still there should be some way of compell ing the champions to defend their tit les at stated intervals. The motto of the present day cham pions seems to be to preserve rather than defend their titled. There are a few exceptions like Harry Urcb, the middleweight leader. Walter ling en is rated golf's best and most consistent exponent bocause he hflB the proper temperament, tiift competitive spirit. Ho has the fac ulty of being able to accept the "breaks" as they come. When Ha gen makes a poor shot that would irritate the more tetnpera mentnl player, he "doesn't lose his poise but seeks to pick Up the handi cap thrust upon him Dy a bad break. Golf as a nrle destroys dispositions rather than remakes them. Yet Andro Gobert, famous tennis player of France, credits golf with "his tennis comeback. i Three years sgo Gobert, great tennis player, gave up the game. It made him too irritable. He took up golf. In two years he was rated amon the first 10 amateur golfers of Frr.nce. Early discovering that golf was a far greater "goat-getteT" than tennK he decided to make over his disposi tion and succeeded. Recently Gobert made his Teappear-. ance on the tenais court and treated the crowd to a real surprise by tbe manner in which he accepted the many tough breaks that went asainst The Referee Billy y Evans Says Uy BILLY EVANS "VJUKr Bingham has been dropped if-.' a Vale because he failed ui four of his five studies. W Few sports champions secure hold upon their thrones but nothing less thau an athletic miracle can dislodge Paavo Nurmi from his grnsp upon the sceptre of distance running this 'tar. At varying distances, under alt sorts of conditions and ngnirint all classes of oppoHition. the phantom Finn goes racing on to victory aud world'n records. Athletic experts thought Nurmi had roaohed his greatest heights when he raced to four victories at the 1024 Olympics, but his perform ances indoors within the past two months, hare added to his sensation al record . In that time he has reg istered 28 world's record feats in 22 races. Psbto himself, nearing the ago of 2S, thinks he has yet to at tain his best- form and hopes to blaze a record wrecking trail at dis tances of from 800 metres to the marathon within the next five years. Just now Nurmi's most dangerous opponents indoor appear to be Lloyd Halm of the Boston A. A., who has lowered the Finn's record for a mile and l.fiOO metres, and Willie Ritola. countryman of the invader, who is more at home at longer distances.
