(.Special) Examinations arc being
conducted today and tomorrow in the
Springfield high school, with exemp
tions granted to a number of students
who averaged DO per cent or above
in their studies. Exemptions are not
being granted, however, in bookkeep
nig, typewriting, physics, Spanish II
and manual training. r
A total of nine studenfs received
exemptions in Algebra I; three in Al
gebra II; seven in geometry; 10 in
civics; 14 in the history courses;
eight in English I; -three in English
II; nine iu English III; seven in
English V; eight in English VII; four
in social problems; eight in biology;
two in Spanish III; seven In. short
hand; nine in general science; six in
domestic science I; two in domestic
science III; one in Latin III., and lo
in Latin I. , , ' -
There will bo no school Friday
morning. The afternoon of that day

troversy among army and navy of f i
cers over the value of aircraft took

made to committees in congress in
support of increased aviation facili

General Mitchell declared that cer
tain officers were afraid to 'tell the
truth" about aircraft through a fear
of beiug disciplined, "indirectly"
through transfer to less favored
posts.
Representative Perkins would not
reveal the names of the navy officers
who asked not to be summoned, but
he, said that one of them liad declared
if he testified what he believed
"well, Guam is a long distance away."
He said the request had come to
him as chief examiner of the aircraft
committee. He also declared it would
be an "outrage" should General Mit
chell fail of reappointment as assist
ant chief of the air service, and thus
automatically revert to the rank of
colonel. Pending his reply to Secre
tary Weeks' request for information
about his testimony, a decision of the
generul's reappointment is held in
abeyance.
"I propose if possible," Mr. Per
kins added, "to determine to what ex
tent terrorizatipn prevents officers
from telling the truth to congress."

of the memorial campaign shifts this
week to Portland.

Sawmill Stacker
Is to be Re-Built
SPRINGFIELD, Ore., Feb. 4.
(Special) Work of rebuilding the
stacker is going forward at the local
Booth-Kelly sawmill. Steel segments
are being discarded, and replaced by
new ones, and an entirely new founda
tion of concrete and timbers laid. It
will be about two weeks before the
work can be finished ready for opera
tions again, according to John C.
Parker, master mechanic at the mill
who is 'in charge of the construction
work.
