S.UP) Hopes of the Philadelphia Nationals, rising from a chronic second division team, this year lie in the ability ot the eight players who have been obtained to strengthen the club. From the Waterbury team of the Eastern league came Yordy, outfield er, Meti, shorBtop and Ulricb, pitcher. Halter Jummick was obtained in a trade with Los Angeles. . The south furnished Suber, third baseman, and "Chicken" Hawks, first baseman. Fillingim and O'Neill both Boston pitchers, will report Manager Arthur Fletcher so far has released three players who were with him In 1U24, Pitchers Phillip B. (Lefty) Weinert and Lerton Pinto and Andrew Woehers, a third base man. The Phillies finished seventh last season, but Fletcher believes ne has assembled a squad for the 1925 race which will edge into first division. The team ha8 been handicapped by weak pitching.. Present indications are that Walter Holke will appear again at first base and Horace Ford is assured of hie post at second with Heinie Sand fill ing his accustomed position at short stop. Third base is a question, with the prospect that Russell Wright stone will be shifted to the outfield, leaving Huber and Kimmick to fight for the place. Harry Harper will be in right field and Cy Williams, home run hitter, ex pects to resume his duties in center. Wjightstone undoubtedly will play left Fletcher has a capable trio ot catchers in Walter Henhne, Jimmy Wilson and Lou Wendell and the pit chers remaining from the last cam paign are Jimmy Ring, Charley lilaz ocr. He had a otal ot 801 chances, of which 287 were turned into putouts, four were assists snd 10 set down as er rors. Four assists for an outfielder over a Season's span is pretty ' close to the minimum in num ber. But the odd part about Mausers fielding efforts was that he didn't participate in a double play all year. M The marked improvement in foreign ex chiuges this year was jenerally con st rued bj bankers as a reflection of the progress made in the economic rehabilitation of Europe through the adoption of the Dawes plan. Three European currencies, Swed ish crowns, Swiss francs nd Dutch guilders, returned to parity, and were occasionally quoted at a small prem ium. The Canadian dollar also was quoted at a premium for the first time since ,102'J". Sterling exchange, which had been quoted as low as $4.24 1-2 last Janu ary, rose aboTe $4.70 this month to within a couple of 'cents of the peak price established in the winter of 1022-23. which waa the nearest ap proach to parity since the war. The final stage of this advance, coming at a time when the normal course of exchange is downward, due to un usually heavy grain and cotton ship ments, represented the return of British capital, which had migrated to America when the Labor government came into power in Kn gland through fear of adverse legislation on money ed capital, and during the numerous crises that developed over the repara tions problem, prior to the adoption of the Dawes report. Shifting of funds from New York to London to take advantage of the higher interest rates in the British capital also was a factor in the advance. French exchange, which, touched 3.42 cents In March, the lowest price in recent history, rallied to 6.85 cents 1 "Cascarets" 10c if Constipated, I Dizzy, Bilious Feel fine!
