GIN BACKING Expectations Are That Meet ing Will Close By Next Wednesday PAItlS, Jan. 9. W) Important lel'-Kraus are on the way to Washing ton regarding the progress of the ne- zoiinriong between American and lli-itisii financial conferees over the I (liiut;d debt rights of the United tit'ites to shore in the Dawes plau proceeds. Iruuk B. KellcBg. American ambas sador to Grout Uriliiin, who is here for the conference, had a talk with James A. Logan, Jr., also of the American delegation alo thla morn ing. It la not anticipated that the American will confer with represen tatives of any of the othjr countries during the day. SUCCESS FORESEEN 1'AItlS, Jan. O-I'resent expects tions arc that the irJtcr-allied finnn rial conference will close by next Wednesdar and delegates are so con fident of their ability to achieve this result that they are already ranking preparations to lenvo Wednesday night to submit the conclusions of the conference to their respective parna inents. The Anglo-Americnn negotiations continue to make heudwsy, many onestions of detail already being Set tied. It is hoped that the Wadswortb agreement for repayment of the American occupational army costa should be to 24 years or to a longer period, even up to 40 years, and other points will be settled by nigut. Dawss Plan Third Indeed,' the Anglo-American con trovcrsy over the right of the United States to shore in the Dawes plan annuities which was at first regarded as the principal obstacle, now is plac cd as third in order of difficulty among the questions on the program. First comes that of Belgium s per rentage of receipts from Germany. Thia is particularly delicate because it raises the whole question of the disposal of the Dawes plan proceeds Second comes tbe question of dt Tiding the receipts from tbe Itubr oc cupation, ibis is of sucb complexity that it is possible that It may be postponed aa proper examination of books, it is believed, will require mouths. The American claims come third, the cost of the occupation fourth, re , covcry of amounts collected in excess of claims, fiftn, the Belgian wsr dent, sixth, and restitution of industrial machinery and tbe like removed from the occupied region by Germany, seventh. Debt Question Deferred Aa to the question of intcr-allled debts, which loomed so large at the beginning of the week, although ex trnueoiis to the conference, the ex rlmnges of views thus far have con vineed the delegates , of the prlncl pully interested powers that the ques tion is neither ripe nor suitable for irentniout at a general conference, The process of conducting the con fercnee by conversations between the various units composing it continued today. The British and Belgian dele gationa were' in communication dur ink the morning nnd itNvas announc ed (hot 1'rcmior Theunis of Belgium would confer with Finance Minister Clementel of France and Winston Churchill, British chancellor of the cichequer, tliisftornoon. Br PROFESSOR Albert A. Michelson Of University Of Chicago Has Experiments CHICAGO, Jan. 0 Further credence to Einstein s theory of rels tivity waa given here last nigbt when Prof. Albert A. Mlohelson, scientist at ine university oi unicago. asserted :n a lecture that bis most recent experi ments had furnished Einstein another striking confirmation. While he prefaced the announce ment of bis findings, with the state ment that they were provisional. Prof. .Michelson declared ho believed th.it additional experiments which he will make would furtheNsupport Einstein. Ether Drift Used. , The theory was tested bv the ether drift experiment, the latter also being proved, rrot. .uieneison said, in which two' beama of light were thrown oy mirrors in opposite direction through a 5200 foot vacuum tube. The two beana arrived at their starting place at vnrioua displacements, which indi cated there hod been a Impediment in tfte velocity of ligit. One of the prin cipal objects to be determined in tho experiments was whether the mo tion of the earth influenced tbe velo city of light. Had tbe two beams cams home at the identical time then it would have been probable that some of Einstein's theory would have been difficult to explain. As it was, the two beams Showed wide displaccmenta. The result came aa a climax and in rapid tribute. Einstein, not only be ing confirmed, also bad furnished ma. onnl for still more brilliant work, he said. ' Experiment Pictured. A stereopticsn pictured what Pro fessor Michelson in almost a layman's tongue made hie hearera see the fas cination of the art and its intrigues. His demonstration illustrated In s number of ways the striking property of wave motion. A mechanical wave was made so slowly that the eye read ily observed its properties. Small waves or rippleS on tbe surface of water were prejected and made to, cp pear almost at rest through the method known as intermitent illum ination. ' Sound waves were illustrated b.v the Interference ofxtwo trains xif sound waves from two large tuning forks much in the fashion of uie wave travel. Tho picture disclosed that sound waves, like light waves, travel in straight lines. 'Asensiti gas flame was used in this experiment. The flame turned up to. the point of flar ing was made to flare when a high pitched note was sounded. The sec ond wave (too high to be heard) could bo reflected and focused and made -to cast shadows quite like light. Light Analysis Projected. The analysis of light by a prism Into a spectrum was projectel and two Important types, continuous and bright lines spectra, were thrown on the screen. Interference of light waves analo gues to that ot ripples anu eounu were shown oy projecting on tne screen the colors of soap films snd finally the fringes of an interfero meter.
