Local Nurses Pass
State Examination
of
Two Eugene nurses, both employed
at the Mercy hospital, successfully
passed the sAite board examination
for registered nurses, it was announc
ed today. They are Miss Heulah (Juun
and Miss Vera McConnell.
The young women wrote for the
state examination early ia October,
and returns from their papers were
received today.
MASONS ENTERTAIN
Instrumental solos, orchestra num
bers and comedy sketches are on the

year's planting. Another winter as
mild and dry as that of 1023-11124 can
hardly be expected.
Honey Is first collected from the
flowers by the bee in the form of
a thin nectar, consisting of about t0
per cent water and 40 per cent sugar.
Two changes take place in nectar to
form honey.. The bees concentrate
the sugar by evaporating the water
and thus improve the flavor. A chem
ical change takes place similar to the
process that goes on iu the human
stomach after eating cane sugar. As
a result the sugar is in a form that
cat be easily absorbed by the most

Oil showings nave been encounter
ed nt drillings 22 miles east of here,
according to announcement late yes
tevday by officials of the company
conducting the operations. They ex
hibited bottles containing a thick pe
troleum substance of axle grease
consistency, taken from the baler at
the colsp of work Tuesday. The
depth of the well is now IfiO feet. It
is located in the same vicinity where
another company has been conducting
drilling operations.

The importance of insect control is
growing every year, as the injurious

great rapidity, says an Oregon ex
periinent station report. A single

eggs. The .lapanese beetle is cited
as an instance of rapid increase. It
took five New Jersey entomologists
five days to find six of these beetles
in HHtt, while the state was paying
SO cents a quart of 3000, six years
later.

graduate school, University of Iowa,
is expected to arrive in Kugene next

LOGGER DIES OF
Donald ltoyd Henry, 21, whose
skull was broken in a logging accident
at Wendling Tuesday, died this morn
ing at the Kugene hospital. The vic
tim had regained consciousness, how
ever, but was totally paralyzed. It was
found that he had sustained several
fractured vertebrae In bis spinal col
umn in addition to the skull fracture.
Little Ruby Card, the 8-year-old
girl whose skull was fractured Sunday
when she was struck by an automo
bile, is showing marked improvement,
although her condition still remains
critical. It is reported at the Pacific
Christian hospital that she has re
gained consciousness.
