Emery Insurance Agency 37 W Oth St. . tf Curry County Killing1 Will Be Investigated S:lem, Ore., Feb. 21. Miles II. Mc Kce, assistant attorney general, was as signed by Attorney General Van: Winkle to conduct an investigation into the kill ing of Lawrence Hare by Paul Mum power, state pronibiiion agent, in a gun fight near Bandon lust week. - McKee's assignment to this investiga tion followed a request for sui-h nction by Governor Pierce, whose action in turn was based upon a request from J. C. Johnson, district attorney for Curry county, for assistance ill this case and a telegram from James .W. Wheeler, .fumes D. Fay nnd L. A. Damon, citi zens of Gold Ilcnch, ilenniiidiiig the pros ecution of Mumpower. who has been arrested on a charge of first degree mur der. - The situation presented hy the Curry county case is ninaitteitly .1 most, un usual one. Mumpower, n state agent working under the direction of the dis trict attorney nnd sheriff of Curry coun ty. Is charged1 with murder. Under the circumstances the district, nltorney must pronecilte the: case. Tt Is1 believed here thnt this situation has prompted Dis trict Attorney Johnson to ask -for an assistant in handling the case. The killing of Hare occurred during a gun fight, which is said to have fol lowed the attempt of Mumpower to halt nu niitomoblle believed to he earning liquor from California Into Oregon. "Two companions' of Hare were arrested nnd Mumpower was exonerated by a coro ner's jury. ' ' "We will sift the' case to the bottom, regardless of the consequences." Gov ernor Pierce declared in announcing that he had asked Van Winkle to nppoint a special prosecutor. 'Oh, Doctor!' Play At ; Goshen Friday Night Goshen. Feb. 20. On F"''"? evening. "Controller today sanctioned importations '22s,, but. only those sold on contract and only to brewers, guaranteeing to Iriy, their jito portion of our next crop." This cablegram received Tuesday by Durhin & Cornoyer, local hop dealers, announcing the first direct lifting of the Jtrittsh crop control, since it weut ?nlo effect four' years ago, . Wliiln this let-up in the control Is limited, it. may augur some interesting ih'vclopmcntH, ns it indicates that the British controller' went slightly wrong on his figures on English hops and, should the beer trade ilevejop in Eng land, it may operate to the advantage of the American producer.
