A great mantle of secrecy had been spread over the affnlr from its very beginning. Two prominent Kilts of this city have been connected with this vio lation of old "bone dry". In keeping with the loyalty to brothers in this order and in a true sense of frnternlty to nil a committee of three from its members were ordered to take up the charges agtunnt these two culprits and sift this affair to the very bottom. This com- mlttea with the aid of I'nitod State, marshals have shadowed these men fur weeks. Why they were out late at nights was investigated. Depots and automobiles were secretly searched when there was leant suspicion that they bad any con- nection with them. Their mall was closely scrutinized. Whenever a drunken tran sient was hailed before "Jedge" Bryson or an epileptic looking nose appeared on streets in the evening or automobile drivers seemed to lose temporary con trol of car or contents of same, it seemed as if the finger of guilt pointed toward Co1urg. Their cases were taken under advisement with leaden Bkys overhead when following facts leaked out Ira Calcf, a prominent farmer of Coburg district, has a roaming bunch of chickens and for several weeks pnst have been coming home to roost In an intoxicated condition. It was scandal of neighbor hood, so a meeting was called and gov ernment agents were sent for. The habits of these chickens were closely studied, Experts on chickens were called in. Doc Ilesse, J. Ij. Page, Lee Travis, Geo. Hall, Hill nranstetter, J. A. McLean aud others offered their services. The chickens were finally followed and it was estnhli.hed that they were feeding and frollicking sear a shed in an adjoining field belonging to Frank Armitnge. Sus pense now became awful. Was it malt from a diatillery that was reddening the comb of this beautiful loyal rooster of Calef's and dissipating this most mother ly flocks of pullets? The mystery was growing deeper. Strictest secrecy was now maintained, rullets now refused to scratch and seem ed perfectly giddy eggs began to drop, to small amounts. The proud bass of the flick irritable and rough and during eve ning was boisterous. Ills fumous clarion the farmer's morning call was not heard until about 0 o'clock in morning, five hours late. Good ladies of the neigh borhood felt they were scandalised. Gos sip was breaking all speed records. Ex pert opinion and sdvice of needed. Thought of expense was thrown to winds and Jake Jacobs, a famous beverage art ist was sent for. He brought with him his ardent friend and adviser, Lump llarri ken. The light now began to shine. The mystery was as vapor aphis were work iug on the growing wheat on this farm of Armltage's and they were extracting so much natural alcohol from the newly growing heads of grain that the aphis were in a bad state of Inebriety and con sequently when these marauding chick ens took their daily toll of these bugs they were in turn completely lntotxicat- ed. Armltage and Oab-f claim they were the only chickens to their knowledge thst were ever stewed In that neighbor hood. They will make their defense at Klks big patriotic show at the armory. May 22.
