Page Eight EUGENE DAILY GUARD 5,000 MARK IS NEAR IN RED CROSS DRIVE Eugene Alone Went Over 2000 Line in Membership; Rest of County Climbing. Lane county's total ia mounting today toward the 5,000 mark in the big mem lierabip drive. Eugene went above 2,000 today, according to estimates made by Mrs. George N. McLean, in charge of the drive in this city, and the rest of the county is responding in a way that is highly pleasing to the management of the campaign. Cottage Grovo and Spring field are in a merry race for second I.lace in the totals, while Junction City nnd Creswell also are close together in the totals to dote. Cottage Grove had listed 350 at the last report, while tipringfleld was only slightly behind. i Florence and Coburg are both above the hundred mark, and other parts of the county are not far behind them. The weather has been unfavorable for campaign work in the country, and many of the roads have been virtually impass able during the Inst week, but the women who have been handling the canvass have it was nossible. and in- i - stances of the use of high rubber boots have been numerous. Tamalc Factory, 602 Oak St. d22 IS TO The Oregon Public Service commission arrived in Eugene Friday noon to hold n hearing in the matter of the proposed overhead crossing of the Pacific high way over the Southern Pacific railway at Divide. Upon the action of the commission to day will depend somewhat the amount of money which the budget committee will recommend to the taxpayers meeting which will be held in the circuit court room at 10 'o'clock Saturday morning. The budget committees are meeting tcday in joint session to co-ordinate their recommendations before reporting to the taxpayers meeting. DIED RUSSELL In Eugene, Or., at 392 Washington street, Friday,' December 21, 1917, Miss Lavon Russell, at the age of 15 years. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Russell, two sisters, Olive and Bctra, and three brothers, Albert, Wesley and Floyd. ' Deceased was a member of the Meth odist Episcopal church in Sprngfield. She was a student at the Eugene Junior high school. The funeral will be held from the Gor don and Voatch chapel Sunday, Decem ber 23, at 2 p. m., Rev. James T. Moore to be in charge.
