FOOD SPECULATION From every hand emno reports that Americun farmers aro rising to tho oc casion nud planning the biggest crops over grown. Everything tho public can do will bo done to help cultivato and hcrvest thoHO crops. Patriotism and self-interest will take cafe of this part of the program. There rcni'tins another of etpial im portance, nnd that is to see that the food produced on American farms gets to the right parties without waste and without extortion. We believe we violate no rule of fth ion when wo declare thnt the right parties nrc the peopla who consume tills food. The railroads must bnul much of it from the villages to central distributing points. Grain must he ground Into flour nnd meal. , Live stock must be converted into beef nnd bacon. Butter and cheese must he made. Po tatoes must bo kept from fricing. nud benns must be donned nnd put into bags or cans. All of these products will have to be handled in different wnys and sold to consumers or retailers or ex ported by proper authorities to our al lies now fighting our battles in Europe. In the past wc have tolerated a scan dalous amount of juggling and ml ah mul ling of these products. They have been bought by special agents or buyers: sold to Jobbers; re-sold to wholesalers; held In elevntors, cellars and warehouses nnd sold over and over again. They have been dumped into the river to force n shortage and stiffen the price. They have been shipped bock over the routes whence they enme. They have been cormrM by gamblers on 'change. They have been bought hy local merchants on the expectation of doubling their money. They have been hoarded by retailers. All tlx-se things have been done In spite of the fact that many of the oper ations have never added one cent of value to the articles thus handled while they added cost to the consumer and worked a hardship on the producer. Under the present clrcuinntniices food speculation is a crime. The farmer should be guaranteed a good price on everything he sells and the pirates who fatten off the sufferings of their fel lows should be treated as the civilised world has always treated pirates. We should encourage co-operative dis tribution of farm products through an organization of consumers. The farmer should get In direct touch with custo mers whenever possible. Purchases should be made on a cash basis tin quantity lots. The most direct connec tion possible between producer and con sumer Is the economical plan for this nation to sdopt. Hither thit or price regulation. Kllm, nation of unnecessary middlemen Is but a measure of self-protection. Uve Stock Reporter.
