HKIIOKS, - I read about I ho warlike Kuy who Binding goes to battle; and naught can still jP j".vou cry, and nothing can him rattle, nut nobler than the -ftmii 'who wins renown with battle axes, Is he who springs some sunny grins while coughing up his taxes. The captain who, in time of wreck,, , is freo from fear's emotion, who calmly walks his sinking deck, alone upon the ocean, deserves a wreath upon his tile; )w'.A mirely smooth as wax Is; but O the man who wears a smile while coughing up his taxes! I've seen a brave police- man walk where villous knaves were lying, and bullets barely miss- ed his block, nnd )reks and knives were flying; I've Been the wild beast tamer fool with, savage bears and yukses! but O the man who's calm anil cool when coughing up his taxes! Let oak leaves on his brow bo In id. let nothing be denied him! All other heroes wilt and fade when they ure brought beside him! No greater shall be found .while earth revolvcB upon its axis this lofty soul of sterling Worth, who smiles when puylng taxes! WALT MASON, Copyright, 1911, by George Matthew Adams. ECONOMY OF GOOD ROADS. The economic loas due to bad roads is beyond computation and the indifference of the general public toward any projected , improvement of ' our highways is not easily understood. Each owner of property' must' be held accountable for the condition of the highways of 'this' locality. Of our public works the condition of none reflects our bus iness status more accurately than the condition of our highways. To make goodrvpa'ds so-that products of the farm are easily and quickly brought -to this market is to increase the value of every farm along these roads and is practically to increase the farmers' facilities and lessen their expenses; at the same time making this town a bigger and better market for farm produce. If every citizenn could see in actual money the finanoial return on his investment in good roads he would contribute his share thereafter with alacrity. He has drained the swamps on his land and converted them into arablo land. He had bought improved farm implements he has, in fact, adopted all mod ern methods in order to increase the productiveness of his land. But the marketing of his farm products is still seriously hindred by defective highways. The actual returns on any in vestment in improving "the roads to market are just as direct and even more prompt than are those from farm drainage and improved farming methods. , In these days of automobiling good roads open up a much wider range of vision for the rural inhabitants and the same conditions that enable our residents to visit other sections in duce residents of other communities to visit this locality, This Inter communication results in a kind of advertising that inevi tably incroases the value of property in bringing in desirable purchasers. In fact, the results aocruing from the building of good roads comprise an endless chain of benefits to the com munity that builds the roads. How complaisant and gracious are the great trusts recently , decreed to be dissolved. They will obey the iaw their officers declare, as interpreted by the supreme court. This is a gaPant condescension; in the course of time these corporations may come to admit tliftt the publio has rights which should be re spected. ". r - i i Maybe-it's true that Ohio's present legislature is its most corrupt one, but wouldn't it bo wise to add the words, "that has been found out?" The human form divine may not be beautiful clad in trous' ers and skirts; nevertheless, those vseful articles cover a mul titude of shins. According to a Swedish astronomer the earth has about 10,000 more years to live.. That ought to be long enough to sat isfy any of us. BAN llKAKACHI S , !( Kl.V IMS- i ai'im:au. Mrs. Chns.
