Market
Economy in the production of
electricity lies almost entirely in
massing the sources of production in
large central stations and using the
largest possible generating machin
ery.
This one method of centralizing
production and enabling the use of
great generators and engines has
done more than anything else to de
crease steadily the price of electric
current throughout the United States
during the last ten years.
f There can be no large central sta
tions unless there are large MAR
KETS TO BE SERVED.
Whoever intends to lower the cost
cf producing electricity in a given
community must Know his available
marKet and be reasonably sure of its
possibilities before he starts to build
his plant. , , -
The, present management discov
ered that there was a way to build up
a fairly large marKet for electric'
energy in that section of the Willam
ette Valley lying from Eugene north ;
to Albany and Corvallis.
It was found that an electrical
transmission line from Eugene and
Springfield to Albany and Corvallis
would enable the serving of a num
ber of towns and villages enroute, as
well as the cities at both ends all
from one central power station.
By constructing the central sta
tion at Springfield a comparatively
cheep, fuej supply of saw mill refuse
was assured for a long time to come.
There was already installed in
the old power station at Springfield,
two steam turbine-generators of 666
horsepower each, a' total of 1332
horsepower. The new station will
contain these units and another tur
bine unit, the latter capable of gener
ating at least 2668 horsepower. (To
tal 4000 horsepower )
The larger electrical marKet,
made possible by the construction of
the long-distance transmission line,
thus warranted an immediate in
crease in producing capacity of 200
per cent, and the installation of a
GREAT GENERATING UNIT.
This plan, decided- upon by engi
neers admittedly among the fore
most in the country, is designed to
benefit not only Eugene and Spring
field, but the other cities, villages and
towns as well.
The major benefits of the broad
ened marKet and the lower cost of
' production cannot be appropriated
by our company even if it is so de
sired. The very need for increased
demands over the prevailing de
mands for electricity will maKe it
necessary to sell service at the lowest
possible price consistent with sound
operation..
No citizen of Eugene was urged to
assist financially in worKing out this
comprehensive scheme. No delay
was permitted by the present man
agement once it had tome into pos
session of the property and its engi
neers had completed their reports
; The feasibility of water power for
generating the current used was not
lost sight of This feature is being in
vestigated and looKed after.
The plans of the company, as out
lined in this article, are of vital and
material interest to the people of this
city as well as other communities
and are certainly entitled to the con-:
sideration which initiative and en
deavor commonly receive.
r The Oregon Power Company is
asking for no unusual or charitable
consideration on this score. Unless
its managers thought they saw an
. opportunity for a reasonable return
on the investment, they would neith
er, have planned nor builded.
The men and corporations, how
ever, who do PLAN and BUILD, who
conceive projects and PUT THEM
THROUGH; who see FAR and who
ACT COURAGEOUSLY, should at least
receive credit for good faith until it
has been proven otherwise.

active friends of the University have

names thereon are "bogus." He also
makes the astounding discovery
that a number of the men who were

members of a local detective agency,
and Intimates by his statements that
these "local detectives were taking
nay from the committee and at the
same time following their "real em
ployment" by destroying the work
ot the committee by placing eight
hundred bogL. names upon the pe
titions, and as a result of thla in-
vestlgation, Mr. Parklson assumes,
that the committee Is doing crooked!
work and the only resource is for
this eminently honest and disinter
ested man, after the above speci
men ot cogent reasoning, to take ti.e
whole matter out of the hands of
the "farmers and taxpayers," and
the committee and show his eminent
ability by taking the whole load up
on his broad shoulders and do his
dutv bv charging President Camp
boll. Messrs. Dixon, Veach, Cates,
Burkholder, Stewart. Thompson,
Spray and Wood, with wholesale
bribery and tM- most dastardly cor
ruption. Can it be possible that ;
the people of Oregon and Lane'
