It was ihe Rev. A. A. Morrison,
l rector of Trinity church. Portland,
; Oregon, who In the course of his
speech before the house of deputies
I said that to consider the Bible as the
Word of God was to open up the
'church to the criticism of hundreds
of thousands of people, and that no
thinking man today considers the Bi
ble In any such light.
He was vigorous In saying that
the Bible la to be taken for all it
has been said to be.
Threat to Resign Heard
The session today which voted
down hfa opinion was precisely the
same as that to which he made hlfl
original statement. The Rev. J. It.
Winchester, of Memphis, Tenn., told
the gathering In the course or Ins
speech that If the house of deputies
dill not vote down the opinion as ex
pressed by Dr. Morrison, he woul(
resign from Ills rectorship ami from
the church. He offered a resolution
with this ending: "
"Resolved, That this house n!:e
itself on reccrrl as accepting the fact
that the Holy Scripture as accented
by this church Is without doubt the
word of Almlhtv Ood."'
Dr. Morrison Eald nothing In op
nosltlon to the resolution. In fact he
did not speak at all. Rev. John Wil
liams, of Omaha, said it was but
common mcr-'litv to pass this reso
lution, and endorsed it. Sv. ril oth
er ministers spoke on the matter.
