TELEPHONE COMPANY RAISING SWITCH CHARGES ON FARMERS Director of Rural Line Favors Organizing a Farmers' Switch in Eugene Elmira, Or., Feb. 20, 11110. Editor Guard: 1 see by The Guard that the Pacific States Tele phone Co. is about to raise the tax on the people of Eugene, if that Is all they were trying lo dir. it would not be so bad on the tanners, but they are raising tiie switch charges 0UU or 700 per cent. 1 suppose the $150,000,000 dividend declared for the past year was not enough. Tne Home Telephone Co. applied for a franchise in Eugene two or three years ago, ana the business men of Eugene sent in a petition remonstrating against it aud the council refused the franchise, saying it would compel them to have two phones, A merchaut of Lebanon told mo last summer that he received better service for 45 cents of the Home, than he did for Jl.SO from the Pacific States, and when the time was out tor which he had paid, for the last named, he would not use It any longer. Now, It the independ ent company does not build through our county 1 am in favor of organ izing a farmers' switchboard iu Eu gene. There are now 13S1 fanners' phones lu the county, which at the price asked for swltca charges would make suoo.00, saying nothing ot .he people of the towns who pay from (ii to 160 tor their phone per year, and it the business men ot Eu gene don't care to be connected with the farmers we will organize clubs over this county aud send olf to the null bruer ...nioe ior all we use and prove .1.1 1 we can live as well with out them us they can without us.
