Mr. O'Brien' who made the application explained that the old goal promises had passed into the hands of the County Council. It was well known, he said, that the men who had been executed were Innocent of the charge which was preferred against them, and for which they were hastened before their God; and It was better known who the real culprit was, and that he died In America a few years after the tragedy. The graves of the martyrs to Wind Justice have been carefully marked, and, nfter the removal of the bodies, It Is proposed to erect a 'handsome monument to their memory. It Is expected that the memorial will serve as a warning in future trials for mur der, and It will also become a perma nent argument for the abolition of capital punishment. Roynl Sorrow. Two recent deaths have caused great dlstres In the royal family, since King Edward has thereby lost those who were among his closest frlend3. The death of Mr. Monta gu Guest and Consuelo, Duchess of Manchester, following so quickly one upon the other, hnve greatly dis tressed Ills Majesty, and the Royal Set can never be the same now that they are missing. For years Con suelo Duchess of Manchester had entertained the King at her lovely villa at Biarritz on numerous occa sions while he was paying his cus tomary visit to the Continent in the spring, As a hostess she had a rep utation which nil her friends in So ciety envied. Hit dinners and card parties were Invariably a success. of "Peter Pan" several started the idea of providing young sters with Chrt6truas fare less gorge ous and tiring than the old. fashioned pantomime with Its raines ana its transformation scenes. "Peter Pan" so captures childish taste that nat urally It was bound to create a new j school of holiday entertainment. This year the Lyceum, Adelphl and Drury Lane theatres will adhere to their old time pantomimes of "Cin derella," "Aladdin," "Bluebeard" or whatever ancient story they wish to dress In magnificent scenic raiment, but In rivalry with these will be the productions at various smaller thea tres. Mr. Trench Is preparing Maeter linck's delightful fairy play "The Blue Bird" for the Haymarket. The chief note of this product will be simplicity, but the simplicity which leaves no point In the author's work untouched. Maeterlinck himself sanctions the use of such pantomimic devices as stage traps, and. these will be freely employed. The ciripatiy will not fall far short of 100, the larger proportion being children. As "The Blue Bird" may be regarded from two different standpoints, that of a children's en tertainment and that of a psychologi cal problem, It will probably make a v.-ide appeal. At His Majesty's Theatre "Pinkie and the Fairies" will be given again with Ellen Terry as the delightful Auntie ar.;I her brother, Edward Ter ry, as Uncle Gregory.
