Declaring that the fmnthern Dart of Oregon is being neglected and Chat the northern part of California Is similarly treated, the suggestion Is made that Southern Oregon and Northern Cali fornia pool their interests and carve out a state of their own, and the name offered is the state of Siskiyou. Agitation 'for the secession has al ready made its appearance in print in the territory affected, and the cam paign will continue unless the people of Southern Oregon are convinced that Chelr Interests are better sub served by clinging to Oregon ratner than in establishing a common wealth. The idea of a now state is meeting with favor in the extreme southern part of the Beaver State, and the people across t)he line In Northern California ate even now discussing the prospect. Two Sore Spots. Two events of recent oectirrance have precipitated the demnad for a now state. The first came with the slaughter of the normal schools by the LeKlslatune. The second sore 8ot was when a lawyer of Salem blocked the appropriation of 1100, 000 for the Crater Lake road. While Eastern Oregon suffered the loss of a normal school as well as Ashland, Eastern Oregon was well taken care of by the Legislature in other respects, so Eastern Oregon does not feel the sting so soyerely. Eastern Oregon was given a branch asylum aud a scalp bounty law, each very valuable to the resident of that section, and there was also an ap proprlation for the 'portage road at The Dalles, for State Senator N. J. Sinnot obtained 175,000 for this purpose. In Southern Oregon, how ever, nothing but bruises were re ceived. It is from Snlem lKilItlclatrs, how ever, that Southern Oregon has been dealt the blows which have aroused the desire to be divorced from the Willamette Valley. State Senator Smith, of Marlon county, a Salem politician, look the lead In wiping out the Normal bHimIh when he pro mised abolishing file tour Oregon was maintaining and establishing one at Portland. Senator Jay Bow erman wast 1n the forefront of battle against the Normals, Bower-man hail ing from Eastern Oregon, but Bow erman was given liberal encourage ment by Smith of .Marlon. Southern Oregon Senators', led by L. L. Mulit, did their best to protect the Normal at Ashland, but without avail, and the fate of tine Normals was keenly felt in the South. Telegram. MR. 0. J. THIRTY THOUSAND BOOKS IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY About 26,000 Now There 700 Came to Eugene During July By the beginning of college the University library will have about thirty thousands volumes. Acces sions to the library at noon today were 21661. Besides these there were five or six thousand Smithsonian and government documents. During the monchi of July 700 books were brought to the Univer sity. In this number were excellent books of Latin and Greek, on music, on economics, and several good sots on law and of law encyclopedias. Most of the purchases were made at auctions, where the books were sold at the cheaiiest iiossible prices. Lists are kept of books wanted, and Librarian Douglas bids for them at the earliest and best opportunities. Sometimes only four or five will be obtaiued at one auction. GOOD COCUH CURB.
