More Coast leag uers and big baseball players have pawed the diamonds of the bush leagues of Coos county than in any other single part of the Northwest, so no friend of Sid's was surprised when he took to baseball on the Pacific I Grove high school (California) team ;in 1902. I In 1903 he returned to his native : town lots and showed his prowess in I the little league of coast towns. Then : he was persuaded by his parents to ' remove to Eugene, and readily came ins they were paying the largest snl lary at that time. He immediately 'entered upon his career in the Eu i gene high school. When he was not ! playing baseball he planned- and played basketball, and In that field ' he formed his first conception of be I ing a manager. . In the spring and summer of that year he took the Springfield team into nis care and put out the best team that the sawmill city has ever had. win ning the Lane county pennant. Other players picked were White, Pender, Coleman and Fny. Smith played shortstop. He batted .416 and fielded .844. His style is to make the easy ones good, and to show his dash in (ho pinches and in going after the hard ones. His dar ing Is best demonstrated on the bases, and he hns no difficulty in getting on, for while a little man he always hits well. ' As a manager Smith Is popularly supposed to mnke money. But that Ib not due to short-sighted policy of playing popr teams or using poor material. He has a large acquaint ance anion gball playeys, and if a po sition needs bracing up he does not hesitate to get the bracer. On that account, Eugene men have seen the best amateurs in the state play at different times, and the present team has the Indication of being a winner. Germans Will Fly Frankfort-on-t"ie-Maln, July 8. With elaborate ceremonies, the Inter national Aeronautic Exposition was opened here today. Hundreds of dir igible airships of all varieties are on exhibition, and facilities will be of fered to visitors to make tripB in air ships starting from the exhibition grounds. On sixty days during the exhibition there will be races and other competi tions of a sporting and military char acter.
