Summer Rates East DURING THE SEASON 1909 If ME United States Government Top ographic Report Gives Interesting Facts. Advance sheets of a topographic map covering 138,000 acres of the Willamette valley between Eugene and Junction City have Just been re celved. The area was surveyed during the summer of 1908 by the state engineer In co-operation witn the United States Geological survey The finished map will be published for distribution within the near fu ture, and can be obtained for five cents a copy by addressing the U. S. ecological survey, asnington, U C. The map chows at a glance the ir rigation and drainage possibilities of this section and will prove invaluable to the commercial Interests of Eu gene. U shows but one or two houses to the square mile. By promoting and encouraging the practice of irri gation and more intensive and diver sified farming, this map should show from 30 to SO houses to the square mile. Work has begun during the past week on a survey of un equal area to the north of Junction City. Tho ad vance sheets are published on a scale of one and one-fourth inches to the mile. Lands In the valley are shown many contours of five foot in terval with ten foot Intervals Iff the hilly portion of the sheet. The maps are accurately drawn and will serve iih a base for any engineering or other development work. Itllilirnll Less Tlinn Itecerts. Bulletin 209 on "Irrigation in Ore gon" recently issued by the depart ment of Irrigation investigations at Washington, D. C illustrates by dia gram the need of irrigation In he Willamette valley. The striking feature brought out by this diagram Is that the summer rainfall in tne Willamette valley is much less than that which occurs In some arid r glons, and far less than that which occurs in the eastern humid states. The average precipitation at Eugene during June, July ana -. shown by the government records, is but 2.6 inches ns compared with 4.4 j Inches at Denver. S Inches at they-, enne. Wyo.. and 6.2 Inches at Santa Fe. New Mexico. This bulletin was riiten hv .inhn H. Lewis, state en gineer, assisted by Percy A. Cupper, and contains much information on climate, soil, resources and irriga tion possibilities of the state. It is of particular interest to the prospec tive settler and to those in the Wil lamette valley who contemplate Irri gation.
