' 1 INDEPENDENCE. ; We strut when others may behold And vainly boast that we are free; 1 We cling to doctrines that are old - And still to custom crook the knee; ' . We have the wish to earn applause,' To claim the honors of the great But let the superstitions cause Us still to weakly hesitate. .' 4" We speak with unconcealed, contempt Of those who serve exacting kings; 1 And, fancying ourselves exempt From all the hardships serfdom brings, f , We stagger slowly down the years, Too deaf to hear, too blind to see The prey of foolish doubts and fears That keep us chained to slavery. ' 4, Chicago Record-Herald. tttttv4t . Eugene realty is advancing in price steadily. Yesterday a vacant business lot with 75 feet frontage sold for $18,00.0, and a few days before an 18-foot front two-story building brought $15,000. Only a few months before the same property sold for about $6000, and not more than $2000 had been expended on improvements in the interval. This upward tendency is due to the fact that it is generally realized that Eugene is now but fairly entering upon its era of progress, big building operations now assured for 1909'far exceeding the great record of the year now closing. The vast territory tributary to the city is capable, , with proper development, of supporting a prosperous city of at least 25,000 population, while the building of the Natron exten- sion across the mountains, which will no doubt be the first new line of importance constructed by the Harriman interests in the ; West, will of itself be sufficient to make Eugene an interior city of the first-class importance. These facts are realized by the shrewdest business men of the city, as well as outside invesotrs, who have looked into the situation, and this explains the steady advance in values that is daty reflected in the realty transfers, According to the official census reports there are at the present time in the United States 13,000,000 men available for militarv duty." That means that in case of war with a foreign country this great number of stalwart specimens of American manhood can be armed and equipped ana seni imo me nem m defend our homes and country against the invsaion of a hostile army. It also means that they are at the present time available for the purpose of making this the greatest commercial nation on the face of the earth,. which is much more important tnan re garding the splendid showing from a military standpoint. Judge Landis still has the fine habit he fined the Illinois Central Railroad $100 and costs in each of seven cases for vio lating the 2 8 -hour stock law. That gives the railroad magnates the laugh on Rockefeller, eh? Missouri's supreme court must have figured that it was bet ter to fix a fine that could be collected on the triple-headed Standard Oil bunch in the state when it fined each of them $50,-000. VOTES ARE COMING BY THOUSANDS TODAY Still, the car celling of Castro's European letters of credit by the bank of Venezuela will not inconvenience him much, as it is understood that he carried a few millions in coin in his bag gage. ' This judge in New jersey who sentenced a man to live with his wife and be patient until she learned to cook must b'e igno rant of the law which forbids cruel and inhuman punishment. Denmark's royal tombs having been burglarized, doctors may expect quotations for the skeleton of Hamlet from under ground bone dealers, Congress might try sending a round robin to the' White House, suggesting that the special message habit be sworn off. Anyway, Sam Gompers can always remember that he got the longest sentence, even if he does insist that Wright was wrong. CAN'T SELL NEAR BEER IN ALBANY Albany, Or., Dec. 30. The City Counril Inst night passed an ordin ance prohibiting the sale of near-bper in Albany.
