Testimony on a character designed to corroborate stories of (he killing of W. E. Annls which have been told during the J. Halns trial, wns developed today from several of the prosecution's wll nesses. Wlllam Knapp, one of the Baysfde yacht club members, was giv en a vigorous cross-examination after testlfylhg that while sailing toward the dock after the Impromptu boat race had heard the Bhootlng and aw Mrs. Annls running down the run way. "I saw her moving across the float', continued Knapp. "Then she Btopped and went back up the run way again. Someone took her by the arm at the runway. I could not see who stopped her because she was hidden by the Jib of the Annls boat " Mrs. An lis testified yesterday that Thornton turned her back with a re- I volver when she ran across the float j toward her Injured husband. John I C. Stephens, a follow club member of Annls' testified that he beard the defendant say after the shooting: "I came to proteot my brother and would have shot anybody that Inter- i fered. Both Knapp and Stephens asserted that there was a noticeable Interval between the first and subsequent shots fired by Captain Halns at An nls. A I'angeroua Operation. From a paper read by Kdllor lu.u- nett, of The Unlleit OiiIIiiiImI, b.'foro the OreKon-lduho Development Coll-' vetillnu. ' I am only amnll fry in the newa-, paper field. Thu 4 5 yeara I have ', spent In and around newspaper and ! printing offices have been warned, I thrown away, dissipated, lost, for Ij know absolutely nothlux about a weekly paiwr, and a blamed light Iush about a dally paper. 1 do notj ask you to tako my word for thin. All you have to do to find that I am telling the truth la to ko to the . places where I am running papers; and ask the people of those place!. They will toll you that the Irrigator i and The Optimist are no good, and their editor lesa. I take great pride in those papers. They have a wide reputation. I glvo them the best tbore ia In me, but the people of thai towua where they are run will tell j you (with the exception of a few choice aoul who are too good fori this world and will loon be in -vein, the ueome ai a rule will tall1 you that my occupation ought to be i digging poat boles or shoveling, smoke. Of course 1 go to other points, other towns and cities, and the peo-i pie wlno and dine me and g"t mo full of palonacr! and my I am "IT," In very larse type; but my neighbor! know me fur the fraud that 1 am. And In thus itallng my position 1 1 have given the meat and kernel of: my argument, and that is that the people in almost every community In Oregon k'-eji pretty busy cussing; the local paper and Its editor, and wonder how a man ran sloop to pub-, llh such a meanly sheet. The average community seems to : think that the local paper Is a para-1 nl'r F-jtii'-thlnn to let endured but I noi encouraged. They will point across the state llr.e to tho next riiiiniy, to the neighboring city, to any old paper In any old place, and , iel you what, a good paper It Is and i how fortunate a community Is to : have si'-h a sheet; but they will at; i' am time lako p;iins to tell you .O - lb paper In their ownjown Is I plumb cult us, and tho editor a man who does not know the flint princi ples fif tho newspaper business. What would you do without your nowapaper? How long would It be, If your present pupor should close down, until you would ho flirting with some other newspaper man to come to your town, and what prom ises you would hold out, and how you would fall down after he got out hla first Issue. 1 know all about you. I have seen the thing worked to a frazzle In Oregon, and know that the newspaperman Is, ns a rulo, the least paid, the poorest paid, and tho moat grudgingly paid of all. IK VUT'. KNrvv.
