The night being very dark, the man could not be recognized ana no description ti mm i,uu.u obtained. Mr. Pennington foundi that a wool en rags haa been saturated with oil and Ignited. Chief of Police Far rington. who was notfled. immediate ly afterward, visited the scene and found that the rag was a piece o? green skirt. He gathered up what was left of the cloth with a view of using it to ascertain where It came from and in that way secure some cine to the miscreant, but so far has been unsuccessful. Vr damage was done to the build ing further than to scorch the door over where the fire was set. Had it not been discovered at that time the blaze would have been beyond control. The police are working on very sllnht duo, but there seems to be small hope of apprehending the wretch who lighted the fire. Parl ous theories are advanced, among them being that some boy who has been punished at school or who has been expelled, wished to obtain re venge in this manner, but there Is no evide e at -all -definite along that line. Honey, the contractor and builder, yesterday, upon noticing that a cement walk Is being built In front, of the Campl ell residence property at the corner of West N'lnth and Ollva streets, grew rem Inescent and to.d n number o by standers that one day In iSil he killed two d'i"ks winch were wlm mlng In the slough that existed there In the early days. At that time there was not much of a city hero, but wltlun a half block of whnie the ducks , were killed stood a blacksmith shop. This wns where the McFarland blacksmith building now stands, at the corner of West Eighth and Olive streets. Wll'am etto street, only a block away, was somewhat of a bualness thurotiKh fate then, but there were very few buildings) near tho Campbell lot. Mr. Honey says he killed the ducks ahout where the lot corners w!th Ihe ailty which extends between It ant :h'i Innegan brick block. For yearij there existed a big slough In Ihe, vicinity, extending from that point t.ortl.erly and thence easterly past where the new government post- office building Is to be located, and! on out toward the manufacturing district, emptying Into the river. Water stood In portions of the lough all the year round and msny old-timers recall the days when ducks were killed every winter where fine residences and business blocks now stand. Where the new three-story Dunn-Wllklns block Is now belrjg built the water was six and eight feet deep every winter. !
