Only a few, more notes,
Only a finer tone.
And lo! the world bows down
Xtcfore a singer's throne.
Only the same old thoughts
Clothed with a sweeter
sound,
And lo! a poet's brow
With laurel-leaves la
crowned.
Only a finer ear,
Only a swifter skill,
And lo! the artist plays
0,n human hearts at will.
Only a tint or line,
Only a subtler grace,
And lo! the world goes mad
Over a woman's face.

This is the time of year when the newspapers, so frequently
worried by lack of advertising, are taxed to their utmost to han
dle the holiday business that is offered. Last Saturday The
Guard was forced to decline several pages of advertising matter
beoause it was not prepared to handiest on short notice. Next
Saturday, however, we, will print extra pages enough to carry
the business, if the copy is sent in early enough to get it set up.
We will try our best to take care of our patrons during the next
ten days if they will aid us by bringing copy in early.

has no doubt of the arrival of prosperity.
' Perhaps one reason why the tariff is so little understood is
that there are more brainy men personally interested in mud
