The convention of the Oregon State Dairy Association at Sa lem last week was the most successful ever held by that body, Washington and California were represonted in both attendance and exhibits. The grand prize for the best display of dairy pro ducts was awarded to F. A. Schubinger, of Salem, for an ex hibit comprising twenty-six varieties of cheese, The Douglas Creamery Company, of Roseburg, won first award for highest scoring creamery butter, F. G. Mantke, of Sweet Home, for the highest scoring dairy butter, and T. J. Ballantine, of Hobson ville, for the highest scoring cheese. The dairymen pledged a fund of $160 per month for the employment of an expert, to bring dairy conditions throughout the state up to the highest possible standard. An appropriation of $6000 will be asked from the legislature; "President F. L .Kent, of Corvallis, was re elected .with Carl Abrams, of Salem, as secretary. The time of next year's meeting will be chosen to harmonize with the date selected by the Washington dairymenwho meet at Chehalis this vxeek. C. L. Mitchel, of the dairy division, U. S. Mead Albert Edward Mead, governor of the state of Washington, was born at Man hattan, Kas., December 14, 1861. His education was received In the public schools of Kansas, Iowa and Illinois, and In the Southern Illinois Normal School. He studied law in Chicago and was admitted to the bar In Kansas, where he practiced from 1885 to 1889. In the latter year he removed to the state of Washington and opened a law office In the town of Blaine. He took an active part in Republican politics and in 1892 and 1893 served as mayor of his adopted town. He afterward served a term In the Washington house of representatives, and another as coun ty attorney of Whatcom county, t our vears ago he was elected governor of the state for the term that will expire next month.
