But friendship Is a nobler thing Of friendship It is good to sing, Kor truly when a man shall end, He lives in memory of his friend, Who doth his bettor part recall, And of 'his faults make funeral. Austin Dobson. ' -r .- -r4.. -r. An exchange says the home should be made the jolliest place on earth for the children. Don't be afraid of a little fun at the family fireside. Don't let the boys think that all mirth and so cial enjoyment is barred from the home, if you wish to keep them away from places that lead to vice and degredation. , Young people must have fun and relaxation somewhere, and if they do not find it in their homes, they will seek it at other and less de sirable places. Parents should not repress the buoyant spirits of their children, but join in their merriment around the home iireside. The children will lose none of their respect for their father or mother if they occasionally lose their "dignity" and jtake part in the children's fun and sport. An evening's romp 'atadj play with the young folks will drive dull care, away and ;uspel the memory of many an annoyance of the day. Have luil at home. . " , 4 4- . BUT rr IK EUGENB. Game This is one of the current stories in the national canital Representative Oushman, of Washington, came to Speaker Can non with a letter written by the speaker himself. "Mr. Sneak ,er," he said, "I got this letter from you yesterday and I couldn't wad. it. After I studied it quite a spell I showed it to 20 or 30 Yellows in the house, and between us we have spelled out all the "words except those last three, We can't make themout. I want to know if you won't translate those last three words?" "Uncle Joe took the letter and studied it. "Those last three "words that stuck you and everybody else," he said, "are 'per sonal and confidential.' '." The following from The Dalles Chronicle shows how Eugene's 'nterprise is stirring other Oregon cities to action: ' "What has Tielpedmake Eugene what it is today? . Street paving. How can we prove it? Just take a trip to that oity with a crowd of strangers and keep your ears open and they will soon tell you without asking any questions. Eugene has found out what pav ing has done for her and how she is making arrangements to put in fifteen blooks more, making seventy-five in all. The Dalles will have to hurry if she expects to give Eugene a run for the .money." The appointment of the former Populist state chairman, Jol:n C. Young, as postmaster at Portland, indicates that Sena tor Jonathan Bourne, Jr., is still in favor with the president, and that Senator Fulton is not considered a factor in the distribu tion of patronage. It also goes to show that a straight party reoord is not as valuable a political asset as it' has been in the past. Portions of China and the Orient, the customs and the people, were described at the University assem bly this morning by Oscar Gorrell, ex-'Ol. The address was well illus trated, and added to the Interest of the lecture. No comparison was made with American customs or traditions, and no opinions were stated as to the Btatus of Chinese. The hour was almost altogether spent by the speaker in description of the Chi nese, among whom he has lived for four or five years as a teacher and a business man. Fuculty Resolutions. The University faculty passed res olutions at its last meeting asking that the athletic council of the Uni versly refuse to schedule the 'Oregon O. A. C. contest at Portland. The wording is reported to be strong ana vigorous, ana this action, cou pled with the feeling among a ma jority of the students, makes the likelihood of the great annual game belug played at either Corvallis or Eugene very much greater. It's about time to either cut out some' of the social trim mings or to have th? government pay for them, when a president-elect admits that he has to take into consideration wheth er this or that man is able financially to accept a cabinet portfolio.
