What promises to be one of the greatest le gal battles In the criminal annals of Massachusetts will lieisin within the next week or two, when Chester S. Jordan, of Somerville, is placed on trial for the murder of his wife. The killing of Mrs. Jordan and the cutting up of her body by the self-confessed murderer occurred In the early part of last September, and was one of the most gruesome cases with which the Boston police ever had to deal. The confession of the young husband has left him but one ground of de fense, Insanity. Eminent counsel of New York and Boston have been en gaged to conduct the dofense, anr it is understood that the millions of Jesse R. Llvermore, the so-called "cotton king" of New York, who Is a brother-in-law of Jordan, will be used freely to save the young man from the electric chair. Since his arrest a day o rtwo after the murder of his wife Jordan has been confined in the Bast Cambridge Jail, where he has been visited al most dally by his wealthy sisters. Though the close confinement . has told somewhat on his health. Jordan has continued to maintain the same comparative calm that he displayed at the time of his arrest, when he contentedly puffed a cigarette while seated on a trunk containing' his wife's dismembered body. Jordan is about thirty years old. of splendid physique and handsome appearance. His wife, who fell a vic tim to his rage, was an aciress, agea twenty-three years. Jordan was born and raised la Indianapolis, and came to Somerville with his parents aDout ten or twelve years ago. The couple were married In 1904. Mrs. Jordan had been previously married and had lived with her first husband la Cana da. Mr. and Mrs.: Jordan went on the vaudeville stage, Jorda ntaking the part of a tramp and his wife that of a nurse, In a sketch'. 'They first went to Butt Mont,, after their marriage, i but tem&lned there 'only a' short tinfe, as the climate did not agree with them. Later they went to Chicago and appeared in some bf the -smaller theatres .there, , remaining three months. About three years ago they returned to Somerville and went to live In the little house where the tragedy of last September occurred. Through the generosity of Jordan's wealthy relatives the couple were al ways well supplied with, money. But Mrs. Jordan, according to her hus band, had taken to. drinking, and he says, was associating with otter 1 and he became jealous. AniT it men and he became jealous. AniTit was In a jealous quarrel that the trouble started which ended In the death of the woman. ' Jordan declared his wife struck him first, that he then knocked her down and was terrified to find that he had killed her. He left the body undisturbed all night, while he slept in aa adjoining room. The follow ing morning he conceived the idea or nntriiAr tv imdv un. taking it away on one of the steamers and throwing the parts overboard and men report ing to the police that his wife had left him. With a butcher knife and a hnrUnnw he severed the head from the body, and after putting the scalp and hair in the kltcnen range, th oirnii in thn furnace in the cellar. The legs and arms were cut from the body and the ' flesh sliced off In strips, leaving the bones of the limbs practically bare. The bones were then placed in the furnace and the chunks of flesh piled into a trunk with the torso. With the trunk and its ghastly con tents Jordan came to Boston, stop ping at a boarding houRe preliminary io taking a steamer for New York. The discovery of the crime was by me,re chance. The cabman who drove Jordan to the boarding house be came suspicious about the contents of the trunk while carrying 11 into ine house. Its weight made him think it contained stolen silverware, and the nervous manner of Jordan satisfied him that the man was a burglar. The cab driver, believing he was on the trail of a thief, went to the police and told them of the mysteri ous trunk. Officers were detailed to go to the boarding house and investi gate. When Jordan was ordered to open the trunk he did not appear, to be in the 'least nervous or alarmed, but hesitated to comply with the offi cer's retiuest His calm and natural manner and his statements that i he w9 a : traveling salesman, iajidtbat LUO Li u ii IL uouiaiueu HDiym milium threw the police off their gnard. Be lieving it waa better to investigate, however, the officers finally opened the trunk and came upon Its bloody contents. i Jordan submitted without protest to arrest, and upon his arrival at the police station calmly gave the police full details of his crime. An exami nation was made of the house in Som erville and there the police found the head and bones of the murdered wo man and other evidences of the crime. TWO MORE ARRESTS ' FOR BOOZE SELLING RESOLUTIONS, ON DEATH OF LOUIS RENNINGER James Karhan and Pony Witter, J. w. Geary Post, No. 7, 6. A. of Springfield, Placed in Custody Two of the men indicted durlne the past few days by the grand jury for selling liquor are James Karhan and "Pony" Witter, both of Spring- j field. They were placed under arrest , lust evening and brought to Eugene. Karhan gave bonds in the sum of 1500 for his appearance In court, but the latter was placed in the coun ty jail. There have been several other In dictments and more arrests will prob ably take place soon. The grand Jury is still working and many witnesses have been examined. This will be the largest single order of new equipment ever laid down In the Northwest. It embraces one-third of the total of new equip ment prdered by-tne Harrlman sva toms for 1909.
