A corps of carpenters and electricians have been diligently working to have everything In read iness for the opening day. The main building is finished, and the stock pens are nearly finished. The high board fence around the grounds is being extended and the scene is teem ing with Industry. The buildings will be short a coat of paint , this year, for workmen have been too scarce to have It done. The delay In securing lumber has seriously handicapped the construc tion work. A quantity of lumber had been donated, we are informed, but difficulty was' experienced In getting it hauled to the grounds. However, plenty to finish up is now on hand, and the association is preparing for three days of celebration. The buildings will all be electric lighted, and evening visitors will ex perience no difficulty In seeing the exhibits. A special transformer has been ordered, which will be here in time for the big. event. The farmers In this vicinity are taking hold of the proposition with a vim. Many have commenced already hauling their exhibits to town. The committee on exhibits wish to noti fy the exhibitors that there Will pos itively be no exhibit? entered after the opening Morning, Thursday, No vember 19. the bulidlngi must be in readiness when the gates are swung open. There will be no un- f n shed buildings or exhibits on tne opening morning of the fair. Awards of most of the exniDits con sist of a blue ribbon, first prize; red ribbon, second prize, and where a third prize is awarded a white ribbon will be given. The ribbons will be an Insignia which will be proudly dis played by every possessor of such. A monetary consideration would not re main in the mind of a successful ex hibitor as long as the ribbons will, for in most cases pains are taken for their preservation. Suitable programs are now being a7)jnrerekYs'te Kmiu?,ln cn.aree peclal Interest every aSy;1"',0 thoy have up their sleeve Is nnt - known, but w - . will be .no Informed there - .nething which will prove ... interest to the attendance. The local bund will furnish music during the three days, and whilo the com mittee has born disappointed in se curing a carnival company for these dates, a substitution for one has been arranged. Western Oregon. ENORMOUS WESTWARD MOVEMENT IS DUE EARLY NEXT YEAR That there will be a heavy west ward movement next spring is confi dently expected by William McMur- ray, general passenger agent for the O. K. & N company, who has been here today with the general manager and his party, says the Pendleton East Oregonlun. "I look for many people to come westward from the Middle states next spring," said Mr. McMurray. "Just what rates will bo offered to colonists we do not know yet, but tho Harrlninn lines are always ready to assist in a movement to bring set tlers this way. The special round trip ratea offered for those attending the Alaska-Yukon fair will also bring many honieseekers." While here Mr. McMurray also spoke interestingly of the publicity work of the Hnrriman people through the agency of the Sunset Company. Owing to the enormous amount of work being turned out the company has been delayed somewhat In get ting the Umatilla county booklets ready for distribution. However, this may prove of ben efit rather than otherwise. Owing to conditions In the Middle and Eastern BtateB there was comparatively little westward travel this tall. But the outlook for spring traffic Is unusual ly good. In view of this fact Immigration seeking lltlernture may be of much more service now than it would hnve if It had been sent out earlier in the fall.
