ELLIS S2 Daily Guard. 1 WORK TO DEFEAT -CHAMBERLAIN FOR SENATOR HAS BEGUN Anti-statement Republicans feel confident that they will succeea not only in defeating the election of Governor ChamDenain as United States senator, but will elect a Re publican instead when the Oregon legislature meets this Winter, says the Oregonian. This object will be promoted by the circulation among the voters of the state of petitions addressed to the statement Republi can members of both branches of the legislature, relieving them from fulfilling the terms of their pre election pledges. The circulation of such petitions will be started In Multnomah county today. It wa.i at first reported that similar petitions would also be cir culated in other counties of the state from which statement Repub lican legislators were ' elected this year but If that Is the Intention of those opposing the election of Cham berlain it cannot be learned when the outside counties will be can vassed. Plan Republican Caucus. The antl-Btatement forces also are working to secure the organization of both houses of the legislature. Petitions soon will be circulated among the voters requesting the Re publican members of both houses, who took the pledge to enter Into a party caucus to insure the organiza tion of the legislature by the Re publicans. It is expected that no great resistance will be offered to that plan of action by the statement men, some of whom already have expressed a desire to enter a party caucus and abide by Its decision as to the organization of the Btate's lawmaking body. The first petitions relieving state ment Republicans from living up to their pledge and appealing to them to support only a Republican for Senator will be placed in circulation at a meeting of the Sellwood Re publican Club tonight. This was the Club that initiated the petition movement which will be taken up during the next few days by the other' Republican organizations of this city and county. The form of the petition will not be elaborate. Its declarations will be concise and decidedly to the point. YOUNGEST SON OF HENRY WATTERS0N MEETS TRAGIC DEATH New York. Eastern League and American Associat on representatives caused a sensation at the annual meeting of the Nation al association of professional base ball clubs in this city today by with drawing froft the session. The two bolr.'nx fictions had prejenced a resolutlan asking that they be given control of the National Boa'.-J of fr bitratiin and that the W-uior.i and Southern Ungues be rediiei from Class A to B. This resolution wm voted fiown by the meeting.. Dcrunnd Iiium-dinto ArH-n. Presiden; O'linon of th.- American Association, then petitioned -.hat I lie Amer!.;in Association and Easiarn League e allowed to withdraw from the .V.itloral Association nnd re quested permission to nego.la.o with the Amieican League and National League for a special work agree ment. The petitioners insisted upon im mediate action and when their peti tion was overwhelmingly defeated the two factions withdrew from the meeting. They declined to make any statement other than that they did not propose to be governed by a great number of "bush leagues." Their next move, it Is said, will be to confer with the two big leagues the American and the National with the hope that they may be given permission to act as a separate or ganization, really a third league. Rumors which could -not be con firmed, had it that the American As sociation had not given up all idea of invading major league territory and that designs were held on Pitts burg, Cincinnati, St. Louis and Chi cago. It goes without saying that the American association has nothing to hope for from the National com mission. CHARGED WITH COMMISSION OF FIFTY MURDERS Wallace, Idaho, Nov. 11. Facing the charge of committing at least 50 murders and Innumerable robberies two men giving the names of A. J Manning and O. B. Bliss, said to be members or a gang of desperadoes are under heavy guard today, for it i3 feared that an attempt will be made by their confederates to liuer ale them. The charge that led d'rectlv to their arrest Is that of passing bogus cnecKs on railroad contractors. Af ter searching the record of the two prisoners, however, the police were vincea tnat tney are members of a gang that operated In construction camps and murdered 50 workmen between Grand Forks, Idaho, and tart, Montana. In each Instance rob bery was the motive. All the dead men were found, sometimes fts many as three in s day, with skulls crushed and pock ets turned out. The theory advanced by the police is strengthened by the iaui mat ine prisoners own a trunk In which the police found wigs, false mustaches, a complete set of bur glar's tools, stolen mining stock and a rubber stamp for forging checks The police authorities are elated ov er the capture for they think a great uai ui iubt worry is oyer now.
