The lovers of athletic sports in this city may soon be given an opportunity to witness a contest for supremacy between John J. Hayes, winner of the Marathon race In the Olympic games at Lon don Inst July, and Dorando Petri, the Italian runner who finished the first in the great race, but was dis qualified because of being helped across the line. Pnt Powers, who is endeavoring to bring the two fast runners together, has received a cable dispatch stating that Pornmlo sails fror New York to day. If Hayes can arrange his theat rical engagements the race will prob ably be held the latter part of this month In Madison Square Garden. It will be over the same distance as the Marathon race, that is, 26 miles, 3S5 yards. If Hayes and Dorando meet It will be the real sporting sensation of the winter and undoubtedly will attract an enormous crowd. No athletic .con test of modern times created such fooling as the finish in the Marathon race In London last summer. Doran do, who was leading by about four minutes, collapsed after entering the stadium. Half a mile or so before reaching the finish Dorando, It was said, received a drink of wine which caused his legs to give way under him. At any rate he was In a fright ful state and sprawled on the track, but the spectators in their excitement helped him to his feet and he man aged to cross the line. A protest was lodged by the Americans and Hayes got the race. A special prize was pre sented to Dorando by Her .Majesty Queen Alexandria. woon SAWING. John M. P. Dixon, successor to W. E. Boddy.
