Fallowing a campaign that for Intensity and bit terness has never been equalled in this city, an election will be held to morrow for mayor and members of the city council. For the first time In years the regular Democratic nominee for the office Is face to face with a strong opposing candidate. As a re sult it is Expected that the vote will be the largest ever polled In a city election in Atlanta. The Democratic primaries nominat ed for mayor James G. Woodward, who has already served two termB in the office. In Woodward'B terms as mayor his sprees here and In Wash ington and elsewhere gave Atlanta a good deal of notoriety, and his nom ination for a third term was a sur prise. But the climax came early in November, a few weeks after his nomination, when he and ex-Police Commissioner William Oldknow were arrested upon a ' charge of 1 being drunk and disorderly. The arrest came as the result of an Invasion of the redllght district by Woodward and Oldknow, in which Jt wa8 alleged that certain women of the district were handled so roughly that they appealed to the police. The candidate selected was Robert " F. Maddox, a banker and business man with a clean record. An active campaign in behalf of Mrr Maddox was Imme diately started and the supporters of the movement declare they have no doubt of Woodward'11 defeat at .the polls tomorrow.
