GREENLEAF ITEMS o 7hj first line was gotten on the 'varsity team when they beat the alumni Saturday 4 to '0. A place kick In the last part of the second half by Captain lloullen's stub foot made the only score, but twice in the first half the old graduates swept within a fow yarda of a touchdown, only to be held uy a stonewall of the 'varsity line. Coach Forbes said the game was satisfactory. His team showed a very good dofensrt formation, but on ot fense could not make gains. ClarkO, greut spiral punts of 60 yards saved the day for the students. Taken as a whole the 'varsity squad, seventeenXsn being tried out during the contest, showed up Qtter than in any first game for jears. There wore eight old Northwest play ers on tho alumni team, and they outwelgliiQ the 'varsity fifteen or twenty potTiids to the man. Oregon has a good Hue this year. which when required to will stop the i hardest rushes. Purt of the game one tackle was weak, but by a change the point was rengt honed so that such men as Frank Templeton, Ker ron, McKinney and Zacharias qfYld no more plunge for six or eight yards. A weak place this year for the team may be the ends. For defensive work MichaQand Hickson played a groat game, the former in the 'var sity, IIQIatter In the freshmen-Port-lang hlgli gume, but neither of these men have showecfVullty to carry the ball on offense, a thing for which Oregon ends have long been famous. Dodson, another enndidate, seems more cnpuble In offensive work, and In the short time he was in the game Saturday played well defensively. Hayes, a fourth man who is being tried out, plays with all his might, but. seems to need more speed and weight. The back field Is In a curious condi tion. Of the number oWcnndidates for the bncks, Clarke at full has his position cinched. Lntourette, former quartor on the Portland high, plnved one half as halfback and KlltzO.ie other position. I.atourette Is a pig my compared to Clarke, but possesses the faculty or running ends and put ting up good Interference. Hurd. an other canAlnte, who was given a chanco. hart little opportunity to carry the ball. Klltz, who played the en cctlre game, Is a very speedy, well built man. But whatever the forma tion, the Oregon team could not work any kind of plays for gains Sattir riay. except the forward pass twice, two or three bucks by Clarke, and a few brief yards on end runs. Forbes, It may bo stated, has worked almost altogether on defense, so that It was not expocli'hui the scoring machine would bo v.-i-y successful.
