Webster was a native of Connecticut, and a graduate of Yale college. Though his present-day fame rests almost wholly on his dic tionary, he was distinguished before he completed that work as the author of spelling books and of legal and constitutional studies. He began work on his dictionary in 1817, and It was more than ten yenrs later when the first edition was published.
