Rheumatism is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, which is
carried through the circulation to all portions of the system. Every muscle,
nerve, bone and joint absorbs the acrid, pain-producing poison, causing
aches, inflammation, stiffness and other well known symptoms of the disease.
Permanent relief from the pains and discomfort of Rheumatism cannot be
expected from the use of liniments, plasters, and other external treatment
which does not reach the blood, where the cause is located. Such measure
give temporary relief, but in order to cure Rheumatism the uric acid and
inflammatory poison must be expelled from the blood. S. S. S. cures
Rheumatism because it is a perfect blood purifier, Jt goes down into the
circulation, neutralizes the nric acid and drives it from the blood. S. S. S.
expels the irritating, inflammatory matter which is causing the pain, swell
ing and other discomfort, enriches the weak, sour blood, and permanently
cures Rheumatism. In all forms of Rheumatism, whether acute or chronic,
S. S. S. will ba found a safe, vegetable remedy, possessing the properties
needed to cure, and at the same time a medicine that builds up the entire
system by its fine tonic effects. Book on KhtMimutisiu and any medical advice

PHILADELPHIA
WEEK OF
Philadelphia. Oct. 5. A supersti
tious man watched the heroic statue
or William Penn which tops the great
tower of the city hall, when the
whistles and bells and cannon began
to announce the two hundred and
fiftieth anniversary of the birth of
the municipality this morning. This
afternoon he was almost willing to
attest the statement that the bronze
statue of the great Quaker actually
danced for Joy. Many people who
passed the gorgeously decorated edi
fice today thought they detected an
added benevolence In the features of
the Illustrious founder of the city.
Today's contribution to the Found
ers' week celebration was of such a
naturs as to cause the shades of the
departed to hover over the city to
build up which they had given their
best in life, It was more than enough
to Interest and entertain every citi
zen of this city of over a million and
a quarter inhabitants, and tens of
thousands of strangers gathered to
asslHt in the anniversary observance.
For one continuous hour at day
break 10,000 whistles sounded the
reveille and the people soon after
ward began to assemble on the
streets to witness the monster mili
tary parade, which did not
start until after noon. Tho city was
freely decorated with bunting and
flags, especially the thoroughfares
devoted to business, The people
were dressed in holiday attire, and
many stores and factories were closed
in order to permit clerks and work
men to enjoy the day's festivities.
The Initial event of the duy's pro
gramme was a public reception held
by Mayor Iteyburn In honor of the

Portland, Or., Oct. 4. Soda foun

ling fluids today; bootblacks may
rub the public shoes to a polish; and
cigar dealers may pass out fragrant

tine; even the small boy tripping
homeward In happy mood from Sun
day school may pause to buy a cent's
worth of candy or a bag of peanuts
or a bunch of grapes. And all this
without molestation from tho police.
Last Sunday, of course, all these
things were wicked and wrongful, as
evidenced by a law of the vintage of
'(14, resurrected by District Attorney
Cameron, after two decades of dis
use. But out of the state Circuit
Court yesterday afternoon there waB
Issued an Injunction. It restrains
the District Attorney, chief of Police

with the Sunday retailers today. The
Injunction Is of a temporary nature.
In Issuing it, Presiding Judge (ian
tenbeln made the order returnable
tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. At
that hour arguments will be made.
