livered the first load of lumber for

The Commercial Club committee
which visited Creswell yesterday
there and was amazed at the impor
tance of the prune Industry of Cres
well. Dr. L. D. Srarhroiigh showed the
visitors his two dryers, the new one

men and 5 teams besides the pickers.
After the committee had visited
the drying houses they were taken
through the doctor's orchard, which

The results this year of this or
chard will be one hundred dollars an
acre and the trees are only six and
seven years old. They are In excel
lent condition.

Herbert F.astland, a University
graduate of 'tie, has been granted the
full aeholashlp offered by the Uni
versity of Oregon medical college in
Portland lo the graduates of the Uni
versity of Oregon. Kastland took his
major work under Professor Sweet
ser In the biological department. The
scholarship amounts to all the tuition
and fees that are charged at the med
ical school. Two half scholarships
are also awarded each year, but no
decisions have yet been made.

er statistics on the subject of plant
ing oysters for ommercial purposes
No experimental beds will be placed

growth and propagation are possible
It Is said that many oyster shells
are scattered ab'ng the Coos county
beaches, which indicate that oysters
were once a natural product of the
cast. The rea,in that they are tint

ders, an employe of the Albany Iron
Works, narrowly missed death late
last night from a bullet fired hy J.
II. O Urlen. who has been emnloved
on a local newspaper.
Ihe two men hail an altercation
earlier In the evening, and, after a
short fist fight, O'Brien, who had
been drinking, armed himself with a
pistol. Meeting Sanders near the cor
ner of Mrst and Lyon streets O'Brien
queried: "Is your name Sanders?"
and when the latter answered yes he
raised the pistol and fired. The bul
let grazed the right side of Soanders'
fare, which was powder-burned. San
ders then retreated.
This morning, nt the request of
O'Brien's friends. Sanders refused to
sign a complaint charging assault
with Intent to kill, and O'Brien dis
posed of his Interests here and left
the city this afternoon, southbound.
