Cooley, the man who assault ed and robbed Mrs. A. Benson, moth er of Geo. W. Taylor, of this city, at Portland a few weeks ago, was sen tenced to 12 years in the penitentiary by a judge at Portland yesterday. Rev. 0. C. Wright, who has been quite ill for a week, is able to be up and around the house, but will not be able to fill his pulpit at the Bap tist church tomorrow. Professor K. E. DeCou will speak at the morning service. A few freshmen of the high school, captured by the sophomores, were ta ken to Recreation Park last evening and put through a few mild stunts. One of them refused to "key down" and was ducked in a nearby water trough. Mrs. Lulu Tollman leaves tonight for Carson, Iowa, in response to word stilting that her mother Is very ill and desired to see her. Wheeler, of this city, was married a few days ago at Dell Rap ids, S. D., to Miss Mildred Bent. They are now on their way to this city, and after spending a few days here will leave for Toklo, Japan, where Mr. Wheeler will take up his work as secretary of the Y. M. C. A. Joe Knapp, an engineer who for merly who formerly conducted the government testing plant at the Uni versity, but who is now In charge of a similar plant at Seattle, Is visiting friends in Eugene. Knapp is an old football player and does not expect Washington to have a championship team. W. B. Scott, the Lcaburg mer chant, was In the city last evening on his wav to Portland on uusiness. ne states that the road district there re cently voted a ten-mill tax for the Improvement of the roads and now there is a large force of men at work improving the McKenzle road for a stretch of six miles. Grants Pass Courier: Miss Blanche Ferdine returned to Eugene Monduy to resume her studies at the U. of O. after a visit of a couple of weeks with her parents In this city. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Burge, of Day ton, Wash., after a visit at the home of County Clerk and Mrs. E. U. Lee In Eugene, left yesterday for home. They stopped off at Junction City to visit there a few days. Frank Stewart and wife, who have been visiting Mrs. Stewart's mother, Mrs. Jennie Kentnir, and her sisters, Mrs, I. N. Harbaugh and Mrs. J. M. Gearhart, will leave for their home In Marshall, Iowa, tomorrow night. They will return via San Francisco and Los Angeles.
