That is very good Q far as it goes, but what the people would really like to see is the work ings of a telephone that can be used when the subscriber really needs it, without having to ring up "central" a half-dozen times, when the answer is hurled back at you, "line is busy, call again." - " Whenever Captain Haines, murder er of a New" York magazine owner, finds time hanging heavy on his bands, he night send for . Harry Tt,'B pvnense account and care fully study the items. There Is much food for thought In the several thous and Items contained therein. It costs a lot of money to escape the electric chair on an insanity defense, for al ienists' testimony, if It Is the right kind, comes extremely high. The campaign still remains as frigid as the proverbial Iceberg. Some days ago we were promised some thing really startling in the line of sensationalism, but it fails to appear on the horizon. What is lacking is a lot of the old-time spellbinders to lend some interest to the occasion. Estimated on the usual basis of figuring population from school at tendance, Eugene has grown not less than two thousand in the past year. We should think that this would be only a conservtaive estimate judged by the number of new Tiouses that have been built and accupied. In view of the present prominence in politics of big officials, it smacks strongly of humbuggery to reduce the salary of a Denver letter carrier $200 a year because he was too ac tive in politics. Poor devil; he must hav eguessed wrong. Perhaps it Mrs. William Astor would listen to a few speeches in an English parliamentary campaign she would change her mind about Amer ica having all the politicians and Eng land all the statesmen. Hauling down the flag does not necessarily enrage anybody This Is proven by the reception of the pres ident's order to do the hauling down stunt in Cuba on the 28th of next January. This New York girl who Is to mar ry the son of an English multi-millionaire ought to be credited with do ing a little to even up things, even if that was not her object. Now that all the sideshow elections have been pulled off and everybody is satisfied, or say they are, let the band start the music for the big show. Lots of folks don't need a tip from Attorney-General Bonaparte to be convinced that he will retire from office on the 4th of next March. The campaign growing strenuous 'Twauld break a serpent's buck To follow all the trails now blazed By Hitchcock and by Mack. One dashes out to Denver And one toils to Timbuctoo; One chases to Chirng,) Ere the other gets half through. One jerks Taft out of Arkansas And moves him up to Maine; One boosts Bill Bryan out ol Unite And checks him for Champaign. One breakfasts down in Kanliukeu And sleeps in Jacksonville, One goes to bed at Fresno And wakes up at Bunker Hill. The rails are red and burning hot, The air with smoke is black.
