In normal years the present acreage would call for a crop of ap proximately 100,000 bales, but this year the Indications are for a less production. Itel Spider Kntlier I'leiitlfiil While In the list of stations noted red spider Is mentioned In but few localitU-8, the fact Is that practically all sections show ravages of the in sect, while lu some sections the dam age is quite heavy. While aome growers do not agree with this statement. It looks as If the red spider Is the cause of the general ly mixed condition of the crop, al though the extremely dry season has considerable to do with causing such an effect. Take the crop In moat-Bec-ttons and It will be found that but a fraction of the hops on each arm la matured. If picking la started at this time, It will result therefore in tre gathering of not only the matured hops, but likewise the green and un matured crop. - ' I'll Unit Should Ho Delayed While many pickers are at work In the fields at this time, the delaying of operations would mean much to the quality. Whllo ralna might re sult In mold later on, the gathering of the crop now would rause a large amount of unmntured stock to he put on the market and with the price of best hops below the actual cost of production. It la doubtful If the un matured stock would pay for the bal ing, still less provde funds for the carrying on of the harvest. 1'riictlcnlly a majority of the hop growers of Oregon are undecided at the moment as to whether they will gather their l'.iliN crop or not. Much depends upon whether the short sell era ran get more bullish news Into circulation, Ihua putting n false as pect upon the market values and thereby forcing the growers to gnther an unprofitable crop. Whllo ninny growers have suffi cient funds to carry on the harvest without calling upon tho bunkers for loans, most of the growers are not In this position on account of reverses they have met with In bile years. It la the failure of these helpless grow ers which will pull down the total production this year to a considers lilo extent. Had lust year's acreage, with this year's additional acreage, been properly cultivated und gather ed this season there Is little doubt I hat Oregon would have come to the front for 1908 with upward of 200, (100 bales.
