the Mission Street Pavilion tomorrow
afternoon, before what promises to
be one of the largest crowds that
ever witnessed a pugilistic vent In
San Francisco, Buttling Nelson, the
formidable Dane, will step Into the
arena to defend the lightweight
championship against the man from
whom he won the title In the same
ring on July 4 last. 'His opponent
will be Joe Claris, tho veteran negro
lightweight, who held tho champion
ship honors with ease until his sec
ond encounter with tho Chicago lad.
The bout is slated as a forty-five-round
affair. According to the ar
ticles, 70 per cent of the gate re
ceipts will go to the flghterB, 60 per
cent of that to the winner and 40 per
cent to the loser. The weight will
tie 133 pounds, ' stripped, ringside.
Eddie Smith' will referee the contest.
Reports from the NelBon camp to
day aro to the effect that the Dane
Is In tile best of condition add ready

ring. Reports of the same rosy huo
emanate from the Gans quarters.
Whatever tho true condition of the
negro may bo It is certain that he
has trained for this fight as be never
trained before. Several weeks in-the
mountains and a period of strict
training In quarters are said to have
put' him-In the best possible shape.
The hard training in which ho has
Indulged and the fact that ho has
been boxing better than be did when
ho worked for his previous battle
with Nelson has gven his admirers
so much coafldence that they are bet
ting freely on hint to beat the Dane.
The Indications are that there will
be plenty of betting at evua money
at the ringside.

zling speed which has governed his
previous' battles In this and other
cities.
After the fight Owen Moran said
to the assembled newspapermen:
"I broke my right hand In the sec
ond round. After that it was almost
useless. At that I think I won by a

7.' Stanley Kutchol, of Michigan,
middleweight champion of the
world, was knocked out In the 12th
round at Jeffries' Vernon arena at 4
o'clock this afternoon by Hilly Papke,
of Illinois, who Is now the middle
weight champion If tho world. It
was a case of tho Illinois thunderbolt
against the Michigan cyclone, and the
thunderbolt won. Both men entered
the ring In iippareutly perfwt condi
tion. Kotchol bad a decision over
Papke In a previous ten-round bout,
but neither hud ever been kuocked
out.

When Ketcbel stepped to the cen
tre for the second round It was seen
tbut Ills right eye wns closed. At the
next Intermission bis seconds lanced
the eye socket und sucked the blood,
but Ketchell never uguln regained the
sight of bis right eye. Before the
finish the other eye was all but clos
ed, and for the lust three rounds he
staggered ubout the ring, dizzy, like
u drunken ninn, practically blind.
The eleventh round was a repltl
tlon of the tenth, with Papke ham
mering Ketchell ut will and tho lat
ter (daggering around the ring, un
able to see. The gong saved him Just
as ho was knocked through the ropes.
After a minute of fighting In the
13th, Papke sent Ketchell to the unit
twice, mid the second time the Mlch
igander was counted out.
Papke finished almost us strong
as wben he entered the ring. Ketch
ell presented n terrible spectuccle.
Hotll 'eyes were swollen Into great
black puffs and completely closed.
Ills Ill's were swollen. Ills face was
beaten and cut and puffed out of
shape.
