Mr. C. D. He was formerly connect ed with the Pacific Homestead and Oregon Poultry Journal. Furs are to be higher. That may be Important to some, but there are a whole lot of us who expect to wriggle through the winter somehow without buying a new fur overcoat, with prices ranging from $135 to $1300. This Is a warm climate, any way. tit- Now that Russia has $300,000,000 in .real money, obtained from a sale tUIm, as SO per cent of bonds, the czar is said to be dreaming of going after vindication by scrapping with the Japs again. Some men never know when they have enough. Yes, sir-ee; the blasted old tariff has made another life-long enemy in the person of the Boston lady who was caught trying to dodge some thing like $75,000 in duty on a little high-art bric-a-brac she brought over. When Evelyn Thaw could n.ot man age to think up any more shocking stories she managed to get a little inside-page advertising by getting ner vous prostration at the proper time. It should not be forgotten that It Is possible for a voter to be card-Indexed right and then vote wrong. In other words card-indexing him does not guarantee that he will stay put. Whenever some of the most vicious born trouble-makers are at a loss for something to do they try to tangle up one of the candidates in a denomina tional religious maze. It frequently happens that when some slick-talking company promoter comes along with a proposition to "take in local Interests" that he does just that. Any politician who cannot prove by the Vermont returns that his side has a cinch on the presidential elec tion didn't know his business. Doubtless many were surprised that the business of the Havana post office was big enough to turn out a $100,000 shortage. This is Labor Day a legal holiday for everybody but the newspaper man. People look for the ads to tell them these things just us naturally as they would look at a clock to tell the time. Sometimes a clock does not run HometimeB a store's ad does not run. A "ruu-down" clock or ad are about equally uusatisfuctory, uuBorvleeable, misleading. Curious thing about It Is that a merchant who would think It absurd to have a ruu-down" or out-of-repalr clock will, some times, deliberately let his ad stop running.
