A. washburne disposed of the Springrield flour mills to S. K. Noel, of Klamath Kalis. Mr. Noel took charge of the plant today and it will hereafter he operated under his personal control. .Mr. Noel Is a miller of practical ex perience, having milled at various places in the Willamette valley for the past twelve years, including Al bany, Dallas, McMlnnville and other cities. He has been at Klamath Kails for some time past and intended to build a mill there, hut his family did not like that city as a place of resi dence and he decided to return to this valley. Seeing an opportunity to buy the plant at Springfield, he be gan negotiations with Mr. Washburne with the result that the deal was completed today. Mr. Washburne has conducted the mill for the naat eighteen years and lias enjoyed a prosperous business in (hat time. He Is undecided as to his future occupation, but it Is probable that he will coiuiP' . to reside k I.ane county. The Springfield mill was built in 1K54 by Isaac and Elias lirlggs. It was one of the first mills of the state and at that time was considered a very large one. The mill race from which water power to operate the plant Is obtained was built a short time before that. T. G. Hendricks, president of the Klrst National bank of Eugene, one of the wealthiest men In Lane county, helped to build the dace, driving an ox team and working by the day. 4k 4 4 PEUISONAL C. T. A. Bennett, his daugh ter and daughter-in-law, of Portland, had a trying expe rience while coming to Eu gene from Kitson Springs yesterday. Some distance above Lowell they encounter ed a fierce forest fire oil both sides of the road. Many trees had fallen across the road, rendering travel with a team impossible. As the party was due In Portland at a certain time they abandoned the team and set out afoot. They climbed over numerous burnt trees in the road and often times the heat was intense, so close was the fire. They walked thus for ten miles. At Lowell they succeeded In securing a conveyance to Eu gene and reached this city In time to take the delayed fly er to Portland last evening. Tin fruit cans In stock. CHAMBERS HARDWARE! CO.
