V '4 AMUSEMENTS 4 To say that a man's singing voice ripens with years seems rather an absurd statement, hut It Is the truth when Hit Id In connection with Richard lose, "the world's greatest contra tenor, who comes to the Eugene theatre September 3, as the words of a California critic impart: 'To have heard Jose sing last night was like turning the leaves of some long unopened volume, and there coming upon a familiar face or a pleasing passage that had lingered halt hidden in the memory so like his old self was Jose and so like their old sweet tones and notes of those tender ballads pouring In lim pid clearness from the singer a per fectly controlled throat. 'Sliver Threads Among the Gold, "When You and I Were Young, Maggie," those old familiar melodies that car ried one back to childhood and half hearted youth ho sang, with a voice that Is evidently a gift not the cre ation of highly paid instructors nor yet larking the polish and finish us ually considered us only obtainable from this source. As a mutter of fact Jose upsets a good many traditions of the singer; he Is democratic to a degree; Ills repertoire Is a popular one, and ho affects none of the swagger which some concert singers attach to their positions. Those who heard Jose in the old days applauded and reapplauded him last night, and not alone because of the pleasing sen timent of recollection, but because they found that Josb'b voice had ri pened and mellowcsl and grown sweeter with age, like some old wine that Is only opened on state occa sions. Playgoers already know Jose, and before tie uttered a note there was a salvo of applause. But when he begun to sing with the smooth, flowing tones of "Silver Threads Among the Gold" and "The River of Life," there was reason for the en cores which followed and for the en cores that followed the encore. Ap parently thei audience would have been willing to have remained In their Bents the balance of the night, just to hear Jose slug. At the (inliul Mr. Hums has secured tho services lit Miss llendersholt lo sing tho Il lustrated songs again, and no doubt she will meet with n warm welcome from the mauy friends she miuie while singing at the Grand In the early pari of the summer. The fea ture' picture ror tonight is the "Arti ficial I'reiMtrHtion ot a Diamond."
